NEAT Night - The Story of Stuff

story of stuffThe Northern Environmental Action Team (NEAT) will be holding an evening of local live entertainment this Wednesday at the Whole Wheat and Honey Café.
The night will be featuring local musicians Ryan Hennessey and Jennifer Morrisette as well as showing an environmentally conscious, short film, called “The Story of Stuff”.

NEAT Night takes place December 3rd at Whole Wheat and Honey @ 7pm.

The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns, with a special focus on the United States. All the stuff in our lives, beginning from the extraction of the resources to make it, through its production, sale, use and disposal, affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden from view. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues and calls for all of us to create a more sustainable and just world. It'll teach you something. It'll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.

dayna manningDayna Manning will be performing once again at the Whole Wheat and Honey this December with a very special guest Kevin Fox.

Dayna sent out a message a little while ago talking about the show:

Since I was 16 years old I have performed with a very talented Cellist from Halifax named Kevin Fox.  We have toured the country together as a duo many times over and after spending the last three years composing arrangements for the likes of Dolores O¹Riordan (The Cranberries) and Kathleen Edwards, recording with artists as diverse as Raine Maida and Celine Dion, and touring extensively with musicians ranging from Chantal Kreviazuk to Tom Cochrane, Kevin is heading to Fort St. John to first perform songs from his brand new release "Songs for Cello and Voice" then accompany myself. Anyone who caught our performance at the FSJACL's "On The Vine" Concert 3 years ago will be familiar with how wonderful Kevin is. This time he is bringing a live looping machine that will allow him to build entire cello sections live!

To read more about Kevin and to hear some songs from his latest release, please visit http://www.kevinfox.ca
To read more about Dayna, please visit http://www.daynamanning.com

There are only 75 tickets available each night and they are currently available now. Last couple shows with Dayna sold out surprisingly fast so if you're planning on going, pick up your tickets early!

Rob SzaboRob Szabo, Revival Dear, and a possible guest appearance by Peter Katz all on one Saturday night at the Whole Wheat and Honey Cafe on November 15.  The tickets just went on sale and are only available at the Whole Wheat and Honey Cafe.  The tickets are $15, and I'd get them now, because if this show sells out as fast as the Dayna Manning show then you really only have about a week to get them before they are all gone.  For those who don't know Rob Szabo, in addition to being a musical and lyrical genius, he is one of the most genuine good people you could ever meet... Actually, now that I mention it, that goes for Revival Dear and Peter Katz as well.  Okay, so November 15th.. Good Music, Good People, Good Food (Whole Wheat and Honey)... see you there!

Dayna Manning at Whole Wheat and HoneyOn Saturday, September 13th, Dayna Manning will be performing the first ever concert at the new Whole Wheat and Honey! Opening the show will be Jill Yendrys and Lindsay Ward from Last Chance Anna Pascal.

Good fortune to the people who have already bought tickets -- With two weeks to go, the show has already sold out!

If you don't know Dayna Manning, here is a little brief bio from her website.

Acclaimed singer/songwriter Dayna Manning is back with her most delightful record to date. Folkyo is an uplifting and powerful collection of 12 folk-pop-rock songs, impeccably written and exquisitely co-produced by Manning herself. She contributes everything from bass to banjo on the record, along with her usual guitar and piano duties. Prior to Folkyo, Dayna released two albums through EMI Music Canada: her critically acclaimed and Juno nominated Volume 1 and its lush artistic follow-up Shades. But now Folkyo will usher Dayna into a new era. Folkyo marks Dayna’s first release on her brand new, self-owned label LeParc Records. “This project was challenging. Not only have I overseen almost every aspect of Folkyo’s writing, production and release, I had to start a record label, build my own studio and spend the past winter working on the Canadian Pipeline to take it across the finish line.” – Pipeline? That’s right.

Dayna lived in an on site oil and gas camp in northern BC for most of the 2006 winter. “I loved it actually. One of my favorite shows of all time was when we decided to put on a concert in the rec hall at camp. Everyone there knew me as the office clerk. It was exhilarating to be able to surprise peers with my guitar playing and songs. I sold 50 cds that night!” It was a far cry from her usual gigs. Dayna has shared the stage with Burton Cummings, Radiohead, 54:40, Joe Cocker and toured on Lilith Fair. She has recorded with the likes of Sean Ono Lennon and Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Cynthia Hama is playing Earth Hour, at Fort Saint John Coffee Shop - Whole Wheat and Honey.Earth Hour is a global climate change initiative which calls on individuals and businesses around the world to turn off their lights for one hour on Saturday March 29 2008 between 8 pm and 9pm.

The campaign, run by the World Wildlife Federation, aims to express that individual action on a mass scale can help change our planet for the better. As the lights are turned off in participating cities, the event will clearly demonstrate the connection between energy usage and climate change, showing that we, as broader community, can address the biggest threat our planet has ever faced. In British Columbia, BC Hydro will measure the impact on the electricity grid during Earth Hour, to measure the positive effect we can all make by doing our part to reduce energy consumption.

Even in B.C., where the majority of our electricity comes from hydro-power, conserving electricity helps the environment because it means BC Hydro doesn’t have to import as much electricity to meet demand. Imported electricity often comes from coal or natural gas-fired plants which contribute to greenhouse gases.

Together with Vancouver, Kelowna, Kamloops, and over 30 other municipalities throughout BC, the City of Fort St. John has registered with the Earth Hour website in support of this conservation initiative. Fort St. John may seem like small potatoes when compared to larger cities like Vancouver or Kelowna, but in truth, this Energetic City is recognised on a global scale. With the local presence of the Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, the strong local oil and gas industry, and major BC Hydro generation facilities, Fort St. John is a major player in the energy game.

Andrew Arsenault will be playing Earth Hour in Fort St. JohnAs an Earth Hour Ambassador and an advocate for the environment, Nelly Furtado will play an unplugged concert at the Toronto Earth Hour community event. Here in Fort St. John, the Whole Wheat and Honey café at 10147 – 100th Ave, will host an evening of acoustic music featuring local artists Cynthia Hamar, Andrew Arsenault, and Alysha Galbredth. The organizers are taking steps to make the event as carbon-neutral as possible – BC Hydro has provided LED candles to set the mood, while less efficient light sources are turned off. All people from across FSJ are invited to attend.

This project is like an international charity fund raiser but instead of raising funds, it raises awareness; awareness of the small businesses in the area, awareness of the local talent here in the area, and awareness of the energy crisis on the horizon.
