Harpdog Brown Live at the Lido

When one considers that the most common type of harmonica is, by definition, limited – the diatonic scale omits flat and sharp notes – it’s astonishing just how expressive an instrument it can be in the hands of a master like Edmonton’s Harpdog Brown. Harpdog Brown is absolutely the “genuine item; the real deal.” The way he puts his individual stamp on everything he does and with his command of the stage, you’ll enjoying every minute of the show.

The Dog started playing blues 1981 and never looked back. He’s shared the stage with such greats as Matt “Guitar Murphy, Pinetop Perkins, Tim Williams, Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne, The Powder Blues Band, Willie McCalder, Jack de Keyzer, Fathead, Donald Ray Johnson, Morgan Davis and the late Dutch Mason.

In 1994 Harpdog won the prestigious “Muddy Award”; the only Canadian band to receive this honor. In 1995 he was nominated for a Juno Award for “Best Blues Album.”

Brown is a wonderfully gifted singer with a rich palette of colors and a imaginative harmonica player that takes traditional blues into the 20th century. It helps that Harpdog is blessed with a big but supple voice and a raconteur’s charm. He approaches each tune from a storyteller’s perspective, with sly phrasing and nod-‘n’-a-wink aplomb that’s just right for the material.

Above And Beyond, Brown’s latest on his own Dog Breath Records, finds him teamed with fellow Edmontonian Graham Guest, pianist extraordinaire, who spent years working with blues chanteuse Sue Foley among many others. Together they tear through a delightful collection of blues and boogie favorites that’s both intimate and exuberant. You will greatly enjoy the sounds of these songs played live at The Lido.

The combo of harp work and gritty vocals is the essence of solid blues. Graham adds the piano work, and he is a perfect complement to the ‘Dog.

This is gonna be a good one!

A synopsis of Midnight in Paris:

Gil and Inez travel to Paris as a tag-along vacation on her parents' business trip. Gil is a successful Hollywood writer but is struggling on his first novel. He falls in love with the city and thinks they should move there after they get married, but Inez does not share his romantic notions of the city or the idea that the 1920s was the golden age. When Inez goes off dancing with her friends, Gil takes a walk at midnight and discovers what could be the ultimate source of inspiration for writing. Gil's daily walks at midnight in Paris could take him closer to the heart of the city but further from the woman he's about to marry.
