Northern Groove March 2012
Arts, crafts, and rock 'n roll... that was the theme of this months magazine -- complete with a hand-done cover done by our own resident artistic genious Mark Bodner! This months edition is complete with everything from scrapbooking, to local rock 'n roll bands gone big, to the makeup artistry talents, to a complete page spread about the vagina monologues (complete with pictures of well known Fort St. John men in vagina costumes).
Anyways, we had an amazing time putting this latest edition together and hope you get as much joy out of it as we do!
Thanks!

It's time to put on the ritz. The Fitz ritz. This weekend get out for a night out at JD Fitzgerald's on Friday, September 9th and Saturday, September 10th. Ryan definitely knows how to rock and roll you with a foot-tappin' beat and awesome voice - you may have a hard time keeping still!
The show starts at 8 pm at JD Fitzgerald's. Come down and enjoy some drinks and great food along with a great show by the man, Ryan Hennessey.
November Rock n' Roll House Party: Photos
This past Friday Egan's Pub played host to our 3rd ever Rock n' Roll House Party.
It rocked, it rolled, and I managed to snipe some photos of the first two bands who took to the stage.
The Egan's Ramblers with Lindsay Pratt kicked off the night with a set of super-charged blues, old time rock n' roll, and Lindsay Pratt originals. Nick Baccante brought out his silver electric guitar for the occassion, Mike Odowichuck got down and dirty with his acoustic, Todd Koponyas put down the groove behind his drumkit, and Lindsay Pratt layed down her fierce sultry vocals on top. As The Ramblers are a collective sort of bunch it's only natural that they were joined on stage by some friends - the harmonica slingin' Nick Oliphant wailed on his harp and the bejewelled Melissa snuck out of a Christmas party to lend her hip-shakin' powerhouse vocals to the set.
Naughtlia made one of the biggest Egan's debuts I've ever witnessed as the negligee clad Ben Marsh, the shirtless Derek Skauge, and the fully clothed Jake Hebesien transformed the stage into a wild and heavy soundscape. Keep your eyes out for these mad crazy boys on stages around town in the coming months!
The boys of Fallen Idols (Chad Corno, Rhyan Kelly, Conor Okrainec, and Chad Shraeder) showed up dressed to the nines and capped off the night with a set of punk rock that turned the crowd into a legion of dancing sweat monsters.
Click here to view a few photos from the night and stay tuned for more info on December's sure to be epic Rock n' Roll House Party.
November Rock n' Roll House Party Set Times
The time has come for November to get its House Party on! Tomorrow, Friday November 27, we have three local bands slotted to get loud, proud, down, dirty ... and really whatever else they might want to do on the Egan's Pub stage.
To say this is going to be a diverse night would be an understatement ... we have everything from bluegrass to progressive rock to punk rock to old time rock and roll on the roster:
Here are the set times.
9pm - Naughtlia
10pm - Egan's Ramblers with Lindsay Pratt
11pm - Fallen Idols
Click on the links for more info about each of the bands. Don't just read about them though, put your rock n' roll pants on and come see them live!
Fallen Idols to Perform at Rock n' Roll House Party
This month's Rock n' Roll House Party has something special for all you punk rockers. That's right, Fort St. John's resident punk rock band, Fallen Idols, is one of the 3 bands set to rock the house.
You may recognize the band from their performance at the FSJ Music Capital Celebration that was held at Egan's this past August, or from when they played the opening slot at the mad crazy Protest The Hero show.
Fallen Idols features Chad Corno on vocals, Rhyan Kelly on guitar, Conor Okrainec on bass, and Chad Schraeder on drums. The band was born in the fall of 2006 and quickly acquired a fan following in the predominantly country music ridden north. They released their first EP in 2007, the four song Cobra Kai, and in the summer of 2008 followed it up with the six song album Get Awesome. With a couple of tours around British Columbia and Alberta under their belts, Fallen Idols have been extremely hard at work helping to keep the music scene of the north alive.
Visit their MySpace page to have a listen and come down to Egan's Pub this Friday, November 27 and help us take the roof off!

November Rock n' Roll House Party Line-Up
Although you've all probably barely recovered from last month's Halloween themed Rock n' Roll House Party we have another house party on the horizon. Friday, November 27 will be our 3rd Rock n' Roll House Party and looking at the line-up I have a feeling this is going to be another night that we'll all need to recover from!
This month we have 3 bands from Fort St. John on the roster and the line-up is as diverse as it gets ... I'm talking everything from bluegrass to progressive rock to punk rock to old time rock and roll:
Naughtlia - a progressive and kinky trio made up of Ben Marsh, Derek Skauge, and Jake Hebeisen.
The Egan's Ramblers with Lindsay Pratt - the collective darlings of Egan's, most often featuring Nick Baccante, Mike Odowichuk, Todd Koponyas, and Lindsay Pratt.
Fallen Idols - the city's resident punk rock band featuring Chad Corno, Rhyan Kelly, Conor Okrainec, and Chad Schraeder.
This month's Rock n' Roll House Party is part of the city of Fort St. John's Spirit Week. The week will see at least one musical event every night of the week so stay tuned as we bring you more info about the aforementioned bands and the jam-packed week of music.
Egan's Open Mic Temporary Hosts: Jody/Jodie
For those of you who are wondering if Egan's Open Mic is still a go for Wednesday, November 11, the answer is a resounding "Yeah, baby!"
In other Open Mic news, the evening will have two new hosts for the next 3 weeks (Nov 11, Nov 18, and Nov 25) as our longtime host Ryan Hennessey hits the road in support of his new album.
Taking over hosting duties will be a Jody/Jodie duo - Jody Peck and Jodie Ponto. You may be familiar with these ladies as Captain Cameltoe and Pioneer Patty - the hosts of the Halloween Rock n' Roll House Party. If that doesn't ring a bell you may better recognize Jody P as Miss Quincy and Jodie P as the gal who often lurks around local shows with a camera making you all look like rock stars.
Egan's Open Mic usually gets rolling between 8:30-9pm and if you'd like to take the stage just seek out one of the ladies in the above photo - they'll be wielding the sign up sheet .... although there's no guarantee they'll be fully costumed.
So you wanna start a band, do ya?

All right kids, it’s time to get out of the house, put down the practice DVD’s and test yourself as a live musician. After all, music that can be performed should be performed, correct? Here’s another idea: why go it alone? You’ve got friends who play instruments. That’s it!!! Start your own band!!
Disclaimer: While the preceding paragraph may appear as a whimsical description of the thought process many musicians follow when they start a band…it is, in my opinion, not very far off the truth. They say ‘stuff’ happens…and in Fort St. John, stuff happens quickly. So…the paragraph above is certainly plausible.
There are few moments in a musician’s life that are more satisfying than playing with other people and having it all come together perfectly. Good bands recognize that feeling, and they learn how to reproduce the situation that creates it. The universal language of music generates that instinct to seek out others who speak it, and once the collective is found the society (or band) is formed.
I thought I would impart some (hopefully!?) helpful advice to my friends in the community who are starting up, playing in or even breaking up their own bands. Please know that I will never profess to be an authority on inter-personal relationships within music. As all of my experience comes from the Fort St. John scene, however, I feel I have a relevant perspective on navigating a band in our city.
