CANCELLED: Due to unforseen work circumstances, Brad will not be able to make it back to town for this show. He is planning another show for this spring, once work has slowed down, and we hope you will be able to make it!

Shortly after his last show at Patch Java on October 27th 2011 Brad Langerud began a life changing journey of physical, emotional and spiritual growth. The show was a great success and brought many people together; children and adults alike smiled and sang the night away. Everyone walked away from the evening with laughter and lifted spirits. Little did we know that the days following the show would bring about some of the most difficult times in our lives.

Brad was diagnosed with an illness at the start of November and in the weeks and months that past we were never really sure when we would see the next up or down in this struggle. Life seemed to bring about all kinds of new challenges that at moments seemed to bombard us with overwhelming fears and emotions.

But, with the help of loved ones, friends and family Brad has made incredible leaps and bounds forward in healing and in the process created some of his most incredible songs to delight our hearts. This journey through dim and dark times has brought forth even more light to our lives; he has connected deep within his spirit and pulled out more imaginative lyrics and compelling guitar rhythms than ever before.

Hope you can come out and see this intriguing local musician as he displays more of his intellectual songs featuring renowned word play, poetic and thoughtful lyrics backed with uplifting folk and blues influenced beats.

Come see Brad Langerud live at Patch Java Coffee House on Friday January 27th 2012.

Getting Ready for NaNoWriMo

Have you got one or five story ideas floating around in your head? Wanna write a book?

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing on November 1. The goal is to write a 50,000 word, (approximately 175 page) novel by 11:59:59, November 30.

The Fort St. John Library is challenging the our community of writers and potential-writers to become wordsmiths for the month of November! They will be holding a kick-off meet 'n greet on the 1st of November at the Library at 7pm. At the kick-off, the goal is to meet other writers, brainstorm, and get excited about the project. If participants would like to see things like a mid-month write-a-thon or a “Phew, it’s Over!” party, they should definitely come out to the kick-off to voice their opinion and get the planning started.

CJ’s Java on Main, Patch Java and Whole Wheat & Honey as well as the Library have all posted "Caution: Novelists at Work" signs in their windows, signaling that these are welcome places for novelists to camp out, drink some coffee and work on their novel.

For more info check out the Library's website. Now whether you're a novelist or you've only written shopping lists, here's your chance to get connected with the writing community as well as get your story down on paper... or laptop or iPad or scraps of napkin...

Brad Langerud Performing at Patch Java

There is often trouble in balancing the life of an artist, working man, spouse and father, but local musician Brad Langerud seems to have the niche for such a challenge. He tends to be a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to his music, understandably so when you come for such a musically educated background such as he.

Since graduating from Selkirk College of Music in Nelson, BC, and beginning further education in Music Therapy, Brad has become a truly inspired, incredibly well-rounded and multi-talented creative being. Many locals may know him as the winner of Rockin’ The Peace 2006, Brad has had a cd release and played several shows and open mics since then, but took a bit of a hiatus to let go, have fun, relax, love and reclaim his passion for his music.

Now refreshed and armed with a whole new set of songs to celebrate, he is ready to showcase his talent to the Peace Region once again. His lyrics are clever and romantic with an overall vibe of retreat: getting away or hiding out, which has shown to be quite effective at lessening stress amongst listeners. His mellow, melodic songs are a carnival for the senses; his lyrics are poetry and pure magic. Brad uses intriguing word play and thoughtful lyrics backed with up- beat rock, folk and blues influenced rhythms. His humility, intelligence, and songwriting skills are all apparent once again, filling the room with inspired reflections and refreshingly creative melodies.

Brad Langerud’s mystique remains blissfully un-commercialized as this local independent artist seeks to share his musical adventures with us; his music asks a reasonable enough question: Why shouldn't we be content to join him?

Come see Brad Langerud live at Patch Java Coffee House on Thursday October 27th 2011.

$5, doors begin at 7pm.

Andrew Bourcet Releases Thinktanked

On September 29th, Andrew Bourcet performed (as promised on the billboard) at Patch Java. It was the release of “Thinktanked“, and it had left the crowd glowing with self indulgence. Andrew gave a sensational performance, with Conner Brooks. The night ended later then originally scheduled but no one could really object , there was a lot of laughter and everyone just fed off all the energy in the coffee shop that night. The crowd was familiar to the alternative group of Fort St John, though a lot of new faces were found and new fans were made that night.

The genre Andrew has selected for his style is “Neuro-folk“, which stems from an experimental music style called “Neuro funk”, which is a lot of drum and bass. It has a little bit of everything from funk, techno, house and jazz. The performance Andrew said, “was different from my other performances. It helped a lot to have the drummer because I wasn’t alone in keeping the music going, the beat just continued on for everyone’s enjoyment”. These two artists definitely had a feel for the music which made it a fantastic show.

The cover of Thinktanked is a stunning visual of a side profile of a person sketched in black and white. The man behind the drawing is a talented, visual artist by the name of Brad Shaw, Andrew is assured that they are going to try for future projects with visual art and music. So, look out for that… it may just blow your mind! One of the songs on the album, titled “Raft builder“ , is taking him South he says. Where to, I can‘t really say. Basically, expect a lot of creative exploits in the future. He has done everything in his power to get his music out there, You can buy his C.D at Patch Java, or Retro relics downtown. He has it on the internet as well where you can listen to all the tracks and leave feedback. He has a lot of experimental projects that are posted for you to give your perception on music something tasteful and different. Press play, and enjoy the ride.

To see more of Andrew, check out his next show A Night in the Thinktank on November 4th at Mondo Restaurant.
