Spotlight 2011 Presents: Gidd Hampton

Gidd Hampton plays guitar and sings like no one's watching. But they do…and they like it. A sometimes front man and often times side player, he packs a lap steel, a dobro, and his trusty tayor…plays 'em all like he means it. Together Gidd, Huck 'n Dave lay down some great gooves..southern fried with a little northern roots. Cool.

Gidd is performing on the mainstage at Spotlight 2011 with a host of amazing musicians in a show that you don't wanna miss!

Abrams Brothers

Canadian Bluegrass Phenomenon
Grand Ole Opry's Abrams Brothers with Fort St. John’s own Willm Sisters…

The Abrams Brothers – not yet 20 years old and already world renowned.  John, 18, James, 15, and cousin Elijah, 18 have been amazing audiences from around the world with their virtuoso playing and effortless harmonies. On October 8th they're coming to Fort St. John…they're young, fresh and crazy talented. Be prepared to be blown away.

In 2005, this Ontario-based group became the youngest Canadians to appear on Nashville’s iconic Grand Ole Opry stage where many stars before them, the likes of Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and, more recently, Garth Brooks and Carrie Underwood, have stood. They have already traveled overseas to play a European music tour in 2006 that took them through four countries, including a performance at the 2007 and 2008 Jacob’s Ladder Folk Festival in Israel. In 2006, these talented young men received the Daniel Pearl Memorial violin, awarded to especially gifted young musicians in honour of international journalist and musician Daniel Pearl, who was taken hostage and killed in Pakistan in 2002.

Last year the band released Blue On Brown, an album of songs by Arlo Guthrie and Bob Dylan. The record was the boys’ tribute to songwriters they had always admired. Even Arlo Guthrie, the legend himself, recognized the talent of these two youngsters after he first heard them playing his own songs at one of his shows and thought they were “way too young to be playing that good. I know I will be hearing from The Abrams Brothers for a long time to come.”

As Bob Dylan once sang and The Abrams Brothers sing now, “As the present will later be past, the order is rapidly fadin’.” Dylan’s prophecy couldn’t prove to be truer. Welcome to the new order, an order structured according to talent that is here to stay, courtesy of The Abrams Brothers.

JUST IN!!! Fort St John’s very own talented Willm Sisters have been asked to do the opening honours for the Abrams Brothers. They’ve been playing as part of the family band for several years and this summer struck out on their own, performing to Peace region audiences as well as headlining in Stony Plain, AB. As part of Fort St John’s growing ‘under 20’ group of rising-star musicians, they’re fresh, talented and fun!  Come out and support the Willm Sisters in their opening set for the Abrams Brothers!

2nd Annual Take Back The Night

Immediately following the Women's Resource Center AGM, Fort St. John residents are invited to participate in the second annual Take Back the Night. The night starts at 8 pm at the North Peace Cultural Centre and will begin with a message about why everyone has come together, then there will be a candlelight march around town. The RCMP will escort the group in support and also to ensure that the community members participating are safe. This year the plan is to take our "message to the street" literally and write inspirational messages during the march. And of course the participant will make a little noise, hoping to draw attention to the cause and inform the community.

TBTN is an internationally held march and rally intended as a protest against rape and sexual violence. It is held by communities to unify women, men, and children in an awareness of all forms of violence, and derogatory treatment faced by women and girls. TBTN participants come together to support those who have been personally touched and take action to create a safe community for all women and their families.

Come join in and support the creation of healthy relationships and spaces for women and families.

Stage North Presents Cabaret

The rousing music and seductive dancers in the musical Cabaret will open the Stage North season of live theatre on October 21 in Fort St. John. “Wilkommen! Bienvenue! Welcome!” invites the audience to come hear the music play.

The seedy Kit Kat Klub comes to life in pre-war Berlin when Cliff Bradshaw, a young writer (played by Harold Goodwin), and cabaret performer Sally Bowles (Naomi Shore) are drawn into a world of intrigue and seduction by Ernest Ludwig (Paul Swartz). A doomed romance between the German boarding house owner Fraulein Schneider, (Karma Pratt) and a Jewish shopkeeper Herr Schultz (Blair Scott) is a clandestine affair revealing further insight into the growing social unrest in 1931.

Overseeing the action is the Master of Ceremonies of the Kit Kat Club which serves as a constant metaphor for the tenuous and threatening state of later Weimar Germany through the show. Emry Mika plays the Emcee beckoning the audience to enter the world of debauchery, decadence and danger where changing public and political unrest will destroy relationships, lifestyles, and eventually even lives.

The 40 members of the cast and crew have been in rehearsal since July under the director Oliver Hachmeister and choreographer Emry Mika. The elaborate set is almost complete and painting has begun by local muralist Margaret May. Jasmine Large is designing the costumes. Twyla Jordan oversees the volunteers and the production of the show. Sandra Gunn is the music director and is conducting a live orchestra of 6 musicians.

The show has five performances from October 21-29, 2011, all starting at 7:30pm at the North Peace Cultural Centre in Fort St. John. Tickets are available at the NPCC box office or online for $25 adults and $20 students and seniors. The show is not recommended for ages under 14 years old.

Cabaret is one of seven performances of the Stage North 2011-2012 Season. The Big Ticket is available for all seven shows for one low price of $148 adults or $118 students and seniors.

Colin James Live at the Cultural Centre

For every young guitar player growing up in a small town, Colin James’ story is their story – one of drive, passion, ambition and a strong sense that their destiny lay beyond the safe confines of home.

Looking back on a career that now spans two decades, Colin has walked through more than just a few doors to reach the level of success that he enjoys today. He continues to record the music that he loves (having just released his 12th CD, “Rooftops and Satellites”) has sold multi-platinum many times over, and his concert tours continue to sell out coast to coast.

A consummate professional and a superb guitarist, Colin is a musician’s, musician. The confidence that comes with maturity can be heard in his voice and seen in his electrifying stage performance. He does what comes naturally – he always has – he knows no other way and no other life.

Colin James will be appearing live at the Cultural Centre on Sunday, October 30th at 7:30 PM.  Tickets are available at the box office, by phone at (250) 785-1992 and online.  All seats are $45.00.
