Colin James Live at the Cultural Centre

For every young guitar player growing up in a small town, Colin James’ story is their story – one of drive, passion, ambition and a strong sense that their destiny lay beyond the safe confines of home.

Looking back on a career that now spans two decades, Colin has walked through more than just a few doors to reach the level of success that he enjoys today. He continues to record the music that he loves (having just released his 12th CD, “Rooftops and Satellites”) has sold multi-platinum many times over, and his concert tours continue to sell out coast to coast.

A consummate professional and a superb guitarist, Colin is a musician’s, musician. The confidence that comes with maturity can be heard in his voice and seen in his electrifying stage performance. He does what comes naturally – he always has – he knows no other way and no other life.

Colin James will be appearing live at the Cultural Centre on Sunday, October 30th at 7:30 PM.  Tickets are available at the box office, by phone at (250) 785-1992 and online.  All seats are $45.00.

Book the Gig, Then Write the Songs

Just because things have always been done a certain way, does not mean it is the only way to do them. This is exactly how Joseph te Bulte has recently approached his music. Joseph worked backwards, by getting the gig and using it as motivation to build up his song repertoire.

Although Joseph is well-known at Evangel Chapel, he is a fairly new face to the mainstream music scene of Fort St. John. Within our local church, Joseph leads one of our house bands for congregational singing during Sunday meetings. You’ll never find a guy that blends reverent sounds with a rhythmic folk-rock style better. And we love it!

The fascinating part of Joseph’s story is that he proves it’s never too late to chase a dream. Just recently, Joseph took the plunge into the local music scene by signing up for two forty minute sets at the Hudson Hope’s music festival “Jam at the Dam”. With only a few songs written, a full-time job as an electrician, a family of four, and lots of other commitments, he challenged himself to be ready for what he had already committed to.

Instead of making excuses for why it was just not practical or maybe even impossible, Joseph chose to make a plan for success.

After committing to classical guitar lessons, loads of practice, sacrifice, a few songwriters workshops (Face the Music presented by the City of Fort St. John and the North Peace Cultural Centre) and more than a few long days, he and the band pulled off a fantastic show (word is they were a hit). Joseph jokes that he practices so much just to avoid looking and sounding like a hack, but he is the same ol’ guy as before with the same happy family, the same hours in the week...same everything. Except one thing: he’s doing this “thing” that he’s always dreamt of!

Lesson: drop the excuses and just get it done. At the risk of sounding cheesy, I quote Audrey Hepburn: “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible’!

This Week At JD Fitzgerald's

JD Fitzgeralds has got some great entertainment coming up!

On Tuesday, September 20th, Naomi Shore and Lindsay Pratt are taking the Tuesday Night Performance Series stage. You may have heard them separately, but together Naomi and Lindsay are perfectly dynamic. Watch Lindsay pick a melody on the strings as Naomi tickles the piano keys or just simply listen to their voices harmonize. Beware... they sing their way into your heart. Plus, they are awesome fun together and you can count on a quirky show!

On Saturday, September 25th, it's Jam Time! Some of the JD Fitz favorites are gonna take the stage and play the night away. Head down to JD's to hear some local talent play some great music.

Stay tuned for more info about upcoming JD shows. Here's a hint as to what's coming soon: a show with a stone, a double d show, and a show by a guy who's name rhymes with Brian Shmenassey.

If you love Bon Jovi – then make no mistake, this is not a ‘vague imitation’ or ‘local-bar copy band’. There are absolutely no ‘karaoke’ tracks, no pre-recorded background vocals/instruments, and no wigs! Blaze Of Glory looks and sounds so much like Bon Jovi even the most discerning Bon Jovi fans are amazed.

Blaze Of Glory features an outstanding five-piece ensemble cast that has been carefully hand-selected from some of Canada’s finest recording acts – both for their unmistakable musical prowess and their remarkable resemblance to the members of Bon Jovi.

The four vocalists in the group are all professionally-trained lead singers who masterfully duplicate Bon Jovi’s “Wall of Vocals” sound – blending harmonies without the use of any pre-recorded assistance. All five cast members have painstakingly duplicated Bon Jovi’s recordings and concert “extras” to create an incredible musical performance that matches the original artist to the smallest detail.

In & Out of Love, Bad Medicine, You Give Love a Bad Name, Wanted Dead or Alive…This is gonna be a rockin’ show!

Call The Lido for more information or to reserve your seats for the show!

Is Egan's Closing? Nope.

So, I've recently been hearing from many people across the map that Egan's is closing and/or is already closed. Considering we at Northern Groove work with Egan's quite closely with events and promotion I was interested finding out the full story.

The verdict -- Nope, not a chance!

Egan's has been focusing on it's pub experience and has decided to temporarily close the resturaunt until the right time.  There are some new events on the horizon that we can't talk about yet, and some other exciting things (insert mystery here).

In other news -- The Egan's Open Mic has been off the hook and so this last Wednesday I decided to take some pics of the event to show everyone what's been happening!  Enjoy! :)

The Anatomy of Frank Live in the Gallery

"Part experimental, part banjo-art-pop-rock, the band has a wide-ranging sound --- all of which they do well."     - Mac Bartine, Knoxville Jukebox

A catchy little indie band from Charlottesville, Virginia, The Anatomy of Frank is composed of Kyle, Chris, Jimmy, Erik, and George. Their music is usually described as "catchy". Also "unique", "eclectic", and "psychedelic electronic glory".

The Anatomy of Frank likes touring in strange places and sleeping on your floors.

The Anatomy of Frank does not claim to know/care enough about politics to argue effectively. But it reserves the right to complain about it when it is artistically relevant.

The Anatomy of Frank believes music is good for many things. Among these are dancing recklessly, sitting motionlessly, percolating, sobbing privately, weeping publicly, destroying things, getting into relationships, getting out of relationships, nurturing a good mood, enunciating a bad mood, entertaining a fantasy that you are more badass than your social situation allows you to be, accepting that you are average in many ways, believing that you are extraordinary in others, laughing, screaming, and jumping.

Catch Kyle Woolard of The Anatomy of Frank on the tour stop at the Dawson Creek Art Gallery on September 26th at 7 pm. For more info call the Dawson Art Gallery at 250-782-2601 or leave us a comment below!

The Abrams Brothers

On October 14th the North Peace Cultural Centre welcomes the  Abrams Brothers, a Canadian bluegrass phenomenon!

John, 18, James, 15, and cousin Elijah, 18 – have been blowing away audiences across North America, Europe and Israel for the past several years with their virtuoso playing and effortless harmonies. These fourth-generation musicians have musical roots reaching back to their great-grandparents. Musical collaborations spanning generations in the Abrams family, be it at hometown performances, in the recording studio or on tour, are practically family tradition.

With as many credits to their name as The Abrams Brothers have, they’re veterans even at their young ages. In 2005, the Ontario-based group became the youngest Canadians to appear on Nashville’s iconic Grand Ole Opry. Check out some of their music on their Youtube channel.

The Theatre doors open at 7:00. Show starts at 7:30. Tickets are $40.00 Adult, $35.00 Seniors/Youth, $20 12 and under. Or save 25% and receive additional perks with your purchase of a Touchstone Series pass or International Series Pass.
