Northern Groove March 2012
Arts, crafts, and rock 'n roll... that was the theme of this months magazine -- complete with a hand-done cover done by our own resident artistic genious Mark Bodner! This months edition is complete with everything from scrapbooking, to local rock 'n roll bands gone big, to the makeup artistry talents, to a complete page spread about the vagina monologues (complete with pictures of well known Fort St. John men in vagina costumes).
Anyways, we had an amazing time putting this latest edition together and hope you get as much joy out of it as we do!
Thanks!

Happy New Year from Northern Groove
Welcome to 2012, the year the Mayans gave up on calendars, life, the universe, and everything. Well, not til December at least...which means we have 11 more issues of Northern Groove mag to go until, much like Y2K, nothing exciting happens and we sit around and wait for the next bit of nonsense about the end of everything to come around.

Northern Groove Dec 2011
Happy Holidays from Northern Groove! We've got tons of great stuff for you this month like interviews with Fay ... and Faye! They talk about their passions and the creative things they do. There's thoughts while travelling, a backstage peek at the cast of Charlie Brown, tales of multi-cultural Christmases, cartoons from Tyson Mowatt and Rainbow Owl... And of course the always spetacular Gift Guide! Full of local artists and artisans sharing their great and unique gift ideas - from pottery to seatbelt purses and handknitted touques to paintings. And speaking of paintings, our awesome cover girl is Sarah DeMaid, a local painter and contributer to the Gift Guide! There's tons more but you'll have to check it out for yourself...
Northern Groove Nov 2011
Northern Groove for Movember (er... November) features moustaches, welding Rain'mo Owl, Home Routes with Marianne Girard, spectacular Spotlight, meeting FSJ and the mooses, funny times with Spontaneous Combustion, what's up with Rising Spirit, facing the music, Cuban beats and much much more!
Cover of the Northern Groove
For those who attended Spotlight 2011 -- Asia White was on the scene offering the opportunity of a lifetime: The opportunity to get your picture on the cover of the Northern Groove. (It's actually kinda hard to say without starting to hum the Dr. Hook song). The pictures are provided below... (they're not actually going to be on the cover of the next magazine, but if you send the picture to your family and say that it was... we'll do what we can to keep the secret).
The event was graciously sponsored by the good folks at the North Peace Savings and Credit Union, so we thought we'd say thanks to both them and to you (the folks who came to the show and were brave enough to get their picture taken), by offering these photos!
Thanks!
... little known fact... Dr. Hook never actually have been featured on the cover of the Rolling Stone. I understand a cartoon version of them has been featured in jest... but the band themselves? Not once.
If a band wants to write and record a hit song about Northern Groove -- we will at least have the decency to put you on the cover. Just sayin'.
Northern Groove Oct 2011
Northern Groove for October 2011 features this year's Spotlight 2011 performers on the cover. Articles this month include a profile of Naomi Shore, info on this year's Home Routes Concerts, a recap of NENAS First Annual Gala Awards Celebration, Tony Warriner's thoughts on writing, Fort St. John Loves Families Week, more on Stage North's production of Cabaret, this year's Movmember fundraising, Fairy Wings and halloween, the Abrams Brothers, Willms Sisters, and new technologies at the Fort St. John Hospital.
All that and more....
Northern Groove Sept 2011
Ah....fall is in the air, and the September Northern Groove magazine is on shelves, coffee tables, nooks, and places here and there about town. This month's cover features local designer Catherine Ruddell modelling a dress she created to promote Stage North's Fashion & Form in Film contest, whereby entrants are to reuse movie film to design clothing and art for a fashion show to be held Oscar Night at On The Rocks Pub (more details on the whole contestaroo in the mag or at www.stagenorth.ca). Find out about the Inspriation Six, a group of local artists coming together to showcase not only their individual works...but also collaborative pieces. Also betwixt the pages are blurbs on the upcoming Home Routes Concert Series for fall and spring (this is cool...seeing live music in the comfort of a living room doesn't get any better), plus Henry See chats about the upcoming release of DiVerseCities II, the second anthology of local writer's and poets to hit bookshelves in Fort St. John. Ted Sloan covers his trek to the annual Fall Fair, Randelle Lusk ponders meditation, Clarice Eckford talks about cultural literacy, Tony Warriner reveals Joseph te Bulte's secret to musical merriment, there's pictures of Harvest Fest, Jason Butler chats Bluzfest, Northern Health keeps us up to date on the Fort St. John Hospital and Residential Care Centre, and Rainbow Owl gives his thoughts on relationships.
All that and more....
People and Literature Together Make the Magic Happen
I like to fancy myself a writer. Published works aside, it's a passion for crafting observations onto paper (or a computer screen) that I think best places one in this category. That said, it is with a heavy heart that I bring you this news: Books are finding themselves facing an unfortunate decline in reputation.
Books: for as much heart as you possess, you are quick to forget that it can beat eternal. It is unfair to beg the sympathy of mortals when you can avoid a fate that we cannot. Take a page from us and adapt to surroundings that will sustain you. After a while you end up looking pretty cool.
Humans: for as immortal as Books seem, we are the David to their Goliath -- We need only to avert our eyes. Not to mention that that reference would have failed without them. Let's sexy our brains a bit by busting out the intellectual tuxedos and cocktail dresses on occasion. In fact, I hear they're hosting a party right now...
Readers of Northern Groove: what you have just read is exactly why I love writing. I can bring attention to a very real issue, while remaining playful and sassy. I can use words like "sexy" and get away with it without sounding like a smarmy pervert. Also, I can make books into people. That blows my mind every time.
Words grant one the ability to make the impossible believable. There's a certain magic to that that can never be explained--and I for one, am a big fan of magic.
