Northern Groove Feb 2012

February.....the month of hearts and cupids and roses and chocolates and love and romance and other mushy stuff.  And, this month the mag features the perfect way to score points with a loved one, secret crush, romantic entanglement, significant other, etc with a Valentines Day Sing-a-Gram.  Details?  Yep...shared by a couple local chanteuses...Emily Goodman and Naomi Shore.  This month's cover features local singin' and strummin' type guys, Joseph Te Bulte and Adam Winn who are playing the Breakfast Room at the Pomeroy Hotel Feb 9 (get your tix on this here very website).  Barb Daley informs us about Inspiration 6 bringing "Seasons" to Fort St. John (it's an art show, they are not responsible for weather patterns), Sue Popesku updates us on Stage North's Fashion and Form in Film contest, Oscar Night fun at On the Rocks and the upcoming production "The Good Game".  Need more entertainment value?  It doesn't get any better than Matt Andersen coming to the North Peace Cultural Centre.  Clarice Eckford talks Black History Month and what the Pan African Caribbean Association (PACA) has planned, we re-iced-cap this year's High On Ice with some pix, Randelle Lusk reflects on a conversation she had with a man on a bus in Vancouver, Amy Te Bulte lets us know about the upcoming Sweet Hearts Gala, and Northern Health continues their feature on progress at the new Fort St. John Hospital and Residential Care Centre.

But wait, there's more.  Tony Warriner encourages us to step outside our normal social circle, Dawn Service presents a writing workshop, Ashlee Ecklund and her pooch share the fun of kicksledding with us, and musician's exchange guinea pig Jacob Verberg sits in the editorial chair.

And, of course...Rainbow Owl shares more wit and wisdom.

It's all in the February mag.  You'll love it like a loved one or lover.

The stories I like best are the ones of seemingly every day folk, who oppose all odds, and seem to somehow still figure out a way to do the things that they love to do.,

Adam Winn and Joseph Te Bulte are two of these kinds of people.

To me, both Adam and Joseph seem to encompass what I could imagine being a very similar situation as many residents in Fort St. John around their age... They both have skilled careers, family responsibilities, a house and mortgage, and all of the expected stresses and obligations that seem to be associated with these things.

But what really sets these guys apart, is that somehow in amongst the everyday life stuff, these guys have managed to find the time to develop their skills as musicians and songwriters to rise to a level of playing and performance that many people seldom have the discipline to achieve!

It’s an honour to present Adam Winn and Joseph Te Bulte live at The Breakfast Room, on Thursday, Feb 9th, as they present two full sets of mostly original music. As an additional spash of musical magic, Jacob Verburg has been rehearsing with and will be joining both Adam and Joseph on stage.

These guys have really been working hard towards getting ready, and I’m really excited to be a part of the show! The Breakfast Room will be filled with friends, family, musicians, and music lovers alike! The shows at The Breakfast Room are available to all ages, and everyone is invited! If you’re interested in a night of great music, and wanted to see what these seemingly ordinary local guys have been up-to... I strongly encourage you to come out!

Tickets are $15 in advance below, or $20 at the door.

Musician Exchange Underway - First Impressions

So I’ve been on planes, trains, and automobiles... but my best adventures seem to always start with a good little ride on the greyhound bus.

For those who are new to the musician exchange program  -- Russ asked if I would be willing to spend a month in town playing music and teaching guitar... I thought it would be fun, canceled my trip of Hawaii, after going through all the details signed up...

I arrived Monday Jan.16 at 6:30pm … within a few hours I was jamming 80’s and 90’s rock tunes
with my host and Fort St. John’s own Ryan Hennessey and Mark Bodner. It was a great way to wake up from a 22 hour bus ride from Salmon Arm.

Tuesday was the first official day of work -- I jammed with singer songwriter Joseph Te Bulte and then helped coach a great group of talented teenagers with their band... and oh yes, I should also mention I experienced what -40 degrees feels like.

… Wednesday morning, I was feeling inspired by the start … sat down to play and came up with this little ditty!  Inspired by Fort St. John, -40, and a 22 hour bus ride!  Enjoy!

… Can’t wait to see what the rest of the month is like, and to meet all the people.  I’m looking forward to collaborating with all of the musicains in town!  If you want to contact me send me an email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Book the Gig, Then Write the Songs

Just because things have always been done a certain way, does not mean it is the only way to do them. This is exactly how Joseph te Bulte has recently approached his music. Joseph worked backwards, by getting the gig and using it as motivation to build up his song repertoire.

Although Joseph is well-known at Evangel Chapel, he is a fairly new face to the mainstream music scene of Fort St. John. Within our local church, Joseph leads one of our house bands for congregational singing during Sunday meetings. You’ll never find a guy that blends reverent sounds with a rhythmic folk-rock style better. And we love it!

The fascinating part of Joseph’s story is that he proves it’s never too late to chase a dream. Just recently, Joseph took the plunge into the local music scene by signing up for two forty minute sets at the Hudson Hope’s music festival “Jam at the Dam”. With only a few songs written, a full-time job as an electrician, a family of four, and lots of other commitments, he challenged himself to be ready for what he had already committed to.

Instead of making excuses for why it was just not practical or maybe even impossible, Joseph chose to make a plan for success.

After committing to classical guitar lessons, loads of practice, sacrifice, a few songwriters workshops (Face the Music presented by the City of Fort St. John and the North Peace Cultural Centre) and more than a few long days, he and the band pulled off a fantastic show (word is they were a hit). Joseph jokes that he practices so much just to avoid looking and sounding like a hack, but he is the same ol’ guy as before with the same happy family, the same hours in the week...same everything. Except one thing: he’s doing this “thing” that he’s always dreamt of!

Lesson: drop the excuses and just get it done. At the risk of sounding cheesy, I quote Audrey Hepburn: “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible’!

Egan's is planning a foot-tappin' good time on Friday! Joseph te Bulte and his band of awesome peoples are coming out to play a great live music show.

Joseph te Bulte hails from Fort St. John. This singer-songwriter combine elements of Roots, Reggae, and Folk to create a "Folk-Rock" sound that is both entertaining and musically intriguing. Having grown up in the West Kootenays and lived in a variety of BC interior communities, Joseph has many small town and rural life experiences from which he draws on to craft his songs. Thriving off of the live performance experience, Joseph brings a contagious energy to the stage. Friday night will be featuring Simon Andrews on bass and Todd Koponyas on drums. Both Simon and Todd are very skillful, trained musicians and they know how to bring a funky groove to every song. Simon is primarily a guitar player, but doesn't get as much stage time as he would like on his main instrument because he is in such high demand as a bass player. His creative bass lines will keep you wanting more. Todd also has a name in town as a extremely solid drummer. His creative beats are the backbone of this trio.

On Friday they will be mixing unique brand of originals with a few tasteful cover tunes from other Canadian artists. So come down to Egan's at 8 pm for a lively live show.

Let’s Put Our Music...

Building on Fort St. John’s designation as The Music Capitol of Northern BC, Face The Music has been an outstanding success. We’ve have been running the workshops for over 8 months and each one has been a creative playground for both the artists and the community.

This year alone we had the opportunity to expand our reach to songwriters, musicians, classical pianists, blues guitar players, dj’s, and many more. We had Peter Katz, and songwriter from Toronto. We got to learn how to play the blues with Guy Davis from New York City. Harpdog Brown taught us the intricacies of the harmonica. Sarah Hagen explored the classical realm and Fred Eaglesmith told us the reality of what it takes to be a songwriter, really... no really. Ill Gates educated us on how to work with Abelton Live and produce music with total different inspiration. Harry Manx showed us how true life experience will build beautiful music. Harry did put out his first cd out when he was 47.  We all still got time.

All in all Face The Music has been a really great experience for both the artists and the community. Getting the opportunity to explore new ideas, different styles of music, and discover music we may have never heard before will forever leave a legacy of talent in Fort St. John.

If we’re gonna claim to be The Music Capitol of Northern BC, we gotta own it, and show the rest of the world that we can put the music where our mouth is.

“An initiative like Face The Music solidifies our city’s reputation as The Music Capital of Northern BC. A collaborative effort between city government and the music community, it goes a long way to taking music out to the community, which adds significantly to the quality of life in Fort St. John.”-Bruce Lantz, Mayor, City of Fort St. John

Dear Face the Music people:

I am writing to thank you for your involvement in the Face the Music workshops that the City of Fort Saint John has been sponsoring. I have had the pleasure of taking in a few of them. I really think these are valuable to the local arts and music community. I personally have grown a lot as a musician and song writer by attending these workshops.

The Peter Katz workshop especially was so enlightening for me. When I attended the workshop I was in the middle of a writing dry spell.
In the two weeks after Peter coming I wrote and completed 4 songs, two of which are in the process of being recorded.

I also have a handfull of friends who attended the Guy Davis blues workshop and found it really valuable.
I just want to say thank you again and hope that this can continue on in the future.

Sincerely, Joseph te Bulte

Experience an evening of great food, great art, and great music on Saturday January 29th at Whole Wheat 'n Honey.  Visual artist Amy Te Bulte will be transforming Whole Wheat 'n Honey into a one day art exhibit.  As an artist, Amy loves portraits and is drawn to the energy and intimacy of human form. Combining her love for creativity and community, Amy also works part time as the Music & Arts Director at her local church, often painting live on stage during the music as well as developing a small gallery space in the building. Like many young families, Amy and her husband were initially drawn to Fort St John for work, and were thrilled to discover, and subsequently become part of such a thriving, exciting and supportive arts community.

If you haven't seen Amy's work - this is the ideal opportunity to see many of her best available pieces, all at once.

To complete the evening of entertainment, a concert will be performed by Rik Leaf, with friends Joseph Te Bulte (Amy's husband), and Adam Winn.

Rik Leaf is the kind of artist that inspires all the people around him to add a little creativity into their lives.  Rik’s career is as diverse as the cultural climate of his hometown of Winnipeg; a city where English, French, First Nations and Metis artists and cultures create a truly unique creative environment. Featured on six internationally released compilation CDs in addition to four of his own, Rik has consistently worked to establish an intimate and lasting relationship with audiences drawn to his thought provoking and socially conscious music. Click Here to listen to Rik’s music.

Portions of this evening will be filmed as part of Amy's story featured in the "Where The Art Is" Project.  For more about the project, click here.

Doors open at 7:00 with performances starting shortly after.

Music That Moves You: Photo Recap

Well... on Tuesday we put together a few musicians, a well dressed bunch of strangers, and put them all together in a packed public transport bus.  We drove around town, sang songs in minus thirty degree weather, and an accordian may or may not have been present.... Add it all up, and Tuesday chalked up as an evening for the history books for the City of Fort St. John!

It was all made possible via the efforts of the forward thinking crew at the City of Fort St. John through the project titled "Music that Moves You".   Together with the City, BC Transit, and the amazing musicians of Fort St. John...

Simply put, this is an absolutely unique event, that we wish everyone in our community experiences one way or another!  We took a few pictures, and captured some video (which we may, or may not release one day).  Either way, please take a browse through these photos and next time, hopefully we'll see you on the bus!
