It is a rare person who doesn’t enjoy at least some genre of film. However, seldom do two people agree on what they would rate as the best action flick, the most romantic movie, the funniest comedy, or the most intriguing foreign film. Discussing the merits and shortfalls of movies allows for a good debate, often without the same tension that other topics engender.
The Fort St John Film Society is in its tenth year of screening films that wouldn’t otherwise be shown on a big screen in Fort St John. Whale Rider, the New Zealand film about a teenage Maori girl struggling to both uphold and update tradition, holds the record for highest attendance. Scanning through the list of titles that have been shown over the years, I found there were only two or three movies that I didn’t enjoy. Brothers and After the Wedding, both by the Danish director Susanne Bier, remain my favourites and I would never have been introduced to her talent without the Film Society. Brothers was remade in the US and starred Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal but the reviews suggest it didn’t live up to the original. I am eager to see Ms. Bier’s latest offering – In a Better World – which was chosen as the Danish submission for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards.
Despite a bumpy start to the 2010-2011 season with the first film not arriving for viewing, there was a great turnout for the October movie, The Kids Are All Right. This movie was certainly edgy, focusing as it does on the dynamics of a lesbian couple whose children discover the identity of, and develop a relationship with, the man who provided the sperm for their conception. The November movie is The Secret in Their Eyes, an Argentinean film about a retired lawyer who discovers more information about an old case and also explores an unrequited love. This film has garnered much acclaim and promises to be very exciting. It will be screened at the Lido on November 8 at 7 pm.
The Fort St John Film Society greatly appreciates the Fort St John Arts Council for support, Moose FM for the radio spots, the volunteers who fulfil various roles, and Patch Java for allowing us to advertise events and for selling advance tickets. Staff members at the Aurora Cinema and at the Lido have been very accommodating.
Tickets for the films are $8 in advance at Patch Java; $9 at the door. If you would like to receive the e-mail notices about upcoming movies, please contact

. Another great way to stay in the loop is to join our Facebook page. Attendees at the November movie will have the opportunity to win a flex pass (good for 5 movies) by participating in a contest to choose the favourite film shown over the past 10 years. Meet us at the movies!
