A Ramblin' Halloween Weekend at JD Fitz

This Halloween weekend it's going to be a Ramblin' good time at JD Fitzgerald's!

The Ramblers are playing at JD's on October 28th and 29th. The show starts at 8pm so don't miss out on a good seat. Nick (guitar), Ben (bass), Glen (harp), and Todd (drums) are some guys who have a band and refuse to grow up. They play good music that is as fun to listen to as it is to watch them play it! Check out the show at JD's on Friday, the 28th.

Then on Saturday,et your costume and grab some friends for the Halloween bash that is going down at JD's on October 29th. The Ramblers will be there with bells on (that may depend on their costume...) and they will get the house rockin' with some rollicking tunes. There will be Guiness specials, so grab a pint. And make sure you wear a costume because there will be prizes and honor and respect given to those with the most kickass outfits.

Gotcha!

Interesting boxes and signs have been turning up around Fort St. John, claiming that they "gotcha".

Never fear, it's not crazy people! (well....)

As part of Waste Reduction Week, NEAT, The City of FSJ and various retailers around town are rewarding people for shopping with reusable bags or getting their coffee in a travel mug. If you get got, your name will go in the Gotcha box for a chance to win stuff!

So grab your travel mug (if you're like me, you have at least three that never get used...) and remember your shopping bags when you run to the store. See how many "green" choices you can make this week and maybe even win cool things.

(... and I will try to find my travel mug and use it!)

Brad Langerud Performing at Patch Java

There is often trouble in balancing the life of an artist, working man, spouse and father, but local musician Brad Langerud seems to have the niche for such a challenge. He tends to be a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to his music, understandably so when you come for such a musically educated background such as he.

Since graduating from Selkirk College of Music in Nelson, BC, and beginning further education in Music Therapy, Brad has become a truly inspired, incredibly well-rounded and multi-talented creative being. Many locals may know him as the winner of Rockin’ The Peace 2006, Brad has had a cd release and played several shows and open mics since then, but took a bit of a hiatus to let go, have fun, relax, love and reclaim his passion for his music.

Now refreshed and armed with a whole new set of songs to celebrate, he is ready to showcase his talent to the Peace Region once again. His lyrics are clever and romantic with an overall vibe of retreat: getting away or hiding out, which has shown to be quite effective at lessening stress amongst listeners. His mellow, melodic songs are a carnival for the senses; his lyrics are poetry and pure magic. Brad uses intriguing word play and thoughtful lyrics backed with up- beat rock, folk and blues influenced rhythms. His humility, intelligence, and songwriting skills are all apparent once again, filling the room with inspired reflections and refreshingly creative melodies.

Brad Langerud’s mystique remains blissfully un-commercialized as this local independent artist seeks to share his musical adventures with us; his music asks a reasonable enough question: Why shouldn't we be content to join him?

Come see Brad Langerud live at Patch Java Coffee House on Thursday October 27th 2011.

$5, doors begin at 7pm.

Filling Your Heart At The Cultural Centre

When you go to a show at the Cultural Centre, you are greeted warmly, pick up your crisply folded program, are guided to your seat in the clean theatre, and settle in for a great show. All this and more is possible because of these wonderful people called "volunteers". And the Cultural Centre has some of the most wonderful volunteers you could ever wish to meet.

Terry Beard and Joy Morrison have been volunteering at the Cultural Centre since it first opened it's doors. That's over 20 years of being dedicated to this community building and the arts and culture of Fort St. John. Joy has even kept an amazing scrapbook of all the shows she volunteered at and it's a fantastic trip in time looking back at all the amazing artists that have performed on that stage. Both Terry and Joy started volunteering because of their children being involved in arts programs but they kept coming back to help out because of their personal passion for the arts.

Though it can be hectic and lots of work to pull off a show smoothly, it's always fun.

Sometimes there's seating confusion, sometimes the actors are accidentally locked out of the theatre... But there's always a positive energy and good people to share the experiences with.

In the end, every memory of their time spent at the Cultural Centre is a good one and the fact is that the Terry, Joy, and the other volunteers love the arts and love their community.

Joy's advice is to "volunteer at something you're passionate about and support the community because it fills your heart".

If you're interested in volunteering at the North Peace Cultural Centre and supporting the arts in Fort St. John, all you have to do is visit the office and fill out a contact form.

And you can be a part of the diverse and hilarious group of volunteers that love what they do.

Mike Lynch Band Rocks FSJ

While many of you were suffering through yet another family-based Thanksgiving dinner, the good time music of the Mike Lynch Band was generating some serious foot stompin’ and hand clappin’ heat from a small but enthusiastic band of house concert aficionados. Mike gets ‘er done; his enthusiasm, as they say, is contagious. With songs about drinking, stealing over to the cheating side of town, and life on the road, his themes are as old as country music itself.

Mike’s on tour with a new CD, Road Maps, available at Retro Relics.

In between sets, Mike and his mates lounged on the sofas and drank and exchanged stories, jokes, and youtube links with those in attendance in the cozy atmosphere only a house concert can provide.

The next one is Saturday, 29 October at 7 pm. It’s Nudie from PEI, bringing more country goodness to Fort St John. Tickets are $20 at Retro Relics.
