The word “Seasons” evokes a wide variety of ideas for each of us. We are immersed in the seasons in our environment, as well as the seasons of our times, and the seasons of our own lives. Two years ago, six creative women from either side of the mighty Peace River gathered together to form INSPIRATION 6. Mary Parslow and Mary Mottishaw from Dawson Creek joined imaginative forces with the North Peace’s Cindy Vincent, Sandy Troudt, Judy Templeton and Barbara Daley. They were each in a season of their lives where creative expression was becoming a priority. They started with a website designed by Cary Walters, www.artistsnorthcanada.com. Then they took a leap of faith and booked their first collaborative art show, INSPIRATION 6: “A celebration of the Creative Spirit”, for a year ahead and began to meet monthly to plan the event, create a group vision and encourage each other along the way. The first INSPIRATION 6 show opened at the Dawson Creek Art Gallery in September 2010 and then moved across the river to Peace Gallery North in Fort St. John in October 2010. The shows were enthusiastically received by both communities.

While each of the artists pursues their own separate paths, they regularly meet as a group. Having been invited by the Fairview Art Centre to create an exhibit for October 2011, group members individually interpreted the theme of “Seasons” as well as planned collaborative pieces. “Window to the Soul” was a large collaborative piece that sold quickly in the last show, each pane of the window holding the unique style and interests of a particular artist. “Seasons” is traveling to Fort St. John in February and will be on exhibit at Peace Gallery North from February 3-29. From diverse painting and printmaking to photography, fibre art and mixed media, “Seasons” by INSPIRATION 6 will be sure to inspire YOUR creative spirit.

Barb Daley Sketches of Harpdog Brown at the Lido

Barb Daley's sketches are fantastic -- These were created last night at the Harpdog Brown concert last night at the Lido Theatre featuring Harpdog Brown, Graham Guest, and Andrew Bourcet.  Barb was gracious enough to share them with us on our Facebook Page, and we wanted to share them with you.

What a great way to capture the event!  Please leave comments below!

When you walk into Barb Daley’s studio, you’re met with some pretty incredible sights. After getting past the guard dog, one of the aspects of the room you first notice are the amount of things filling the space. There is an antique sewing machine in the corner. There is a nun on coasters labeled “Hell on Wheels” on the table, and there are art journals. A whole bookcase full of art journals. You may get tired looking at it all, but you can’t help but feel inspired by the time you leave knowing Barb has spent many fond, loving, and sometimes frustrating hours working on every piece.

What is even more inspiring are the five other women in the region with studios just like Barb’s. These women; Sandy Troudt, Cindy Vincent, Judy Templeton, and Barb from the North Peace; Mary Parslow and Mary Mottishaw from the South Peace who make up the artist community called “Inspiration Six”. They met two years ago at Northern Lights College and have literally not looked back since.

Drawn to each other’s similiar energies and loves, the women decided early on that they would take a giant leap of faith and create a sixty piece art show within one year that would be displayed in the Dawson Creek Art Gallery.

They met monthly to make sure it would happen; sharing new mediums, new stories, and new words of encouragement as they traveled back and forth over the Peace River. Eventually, they were ready, and debuted their show “Inspiration Six: A Celebration of the Creative Spirit”, a show based on what inspiration meant to each artist and how they could best express that through art. The show was warmly and widely received and it traveled to Fort St. John for a showing at Peace Gallery North. If you missed it, you can see much of the work by visiting the ladies’ website www.artistsnorthcanada.com which was built by yet another artist Carey Walter.

What inspires these artists? Many different things. The Peace Country. India. Symbols. Photographs. Workshops in the community. Each other. They have since found themselves in another period of their creative lives, and are just putting the final touches on their next show entitled “Seasons” that will debut in Fairview on October 4th. Each artist brings more unique pieces to the show, along with collaborations done by the entire group. Highlighted is their large collaborative piece “Window to the Soul”, a work that shows off each artists’ individual style in one showcase piece. Sandy Troudt uses amazing colour and contrast to paint the Peace, and Mary Mottishaw uses prints to provoke the imagination. Barb Daley pours out her imagination in a number of different mediums including photography, art journals, and sketches, while Cindy Vincent’s illustrations take your breath away at their realistic and descriptive nature. Mary Parslow’s prints show a sense of humor within their beauty, and Judy Templeton’s sumi-e’s and paints calm and soothe while provoking deeper thoughts.

Each of them has a passion for both sharing and learning knowledge; they hold workshops frequently, and are constantly doing work independently of the group. In fact, if you visit their website, you will see that they are involved in shows frequently around the region, sometimes together and sometimes not. While they are a group, they work as individuals, using their monthly meetings to show off new works and new mediums they have discovered and created, to encourage and challenge one another to grow, and to share in laughs and in loves. Perhaps the most inspiring thing about this group of women is they make what they want to make, and see what they would like to see. They envisioned an art show, so they built one. They saw more than a group of women who loved art, so they created a community. And while one may see chaos in each of their studios, they see love, creation, possibilities, passion, and perhaps a bit of organizing to do. But that can come later.

Artists (clockwise from top left): Cindy Vincent, Mary Mottishaw, Barb Daley, Judy Templeton, Sandy Troudt, and Mary Parslow

Barb Daley Sketches of Guy Davis Workshop

Barb Daley's attended the Guy Davis Blues Workshop yesterday at the North Peace Cultural Centre.  When asked, "What is your instrument", she replied: "My sketchpad.".

"It was sublime, listening to all that sacred music, while being in the flow of drawing little scenes around the room.....no one quite LOOKS like they look, but we did capture the FEEL!" - Barb Daley

An amazing art exhibit is yours to behold at the North Peace Cultural Centre this week. Running from May 4 - 8, "Postcards from the East" is the latest collection of Barb Daley's work. The show is set up in the loft and is available for your enjoyment, free of charge.

Creating art journals is a passion for Barb. She has encouraged fellow artists, school children and women's groups to put their ideas and thoughts into art journalling as records of their life experiences.

Barb's trips to India, and most recently China, moved her to make travel journals of her own experiences. The sights and sounds of the East inspired her and stimulated Barb's unique sense of shapes and colours. She is bursting with Eastern visions, and these works allow her to share some of those images.

Please come down to the North Peace Cultural Centre and experience the magic that is 'Postcards from the East' inspired by the Peace region's own 'Daley Mama'.

Introductory Art Journal Mini-Retreat

art journalling_1.JPGKeeping an art journal is a very centering practice that enhances our experience of everyday life, slowing down for a few moments in the day to savour, reflect, and integrate. Our right brain gets to talk for a change….and that change is GOOD! We can keep a visual/art/sketchbook journal for an infinite array of reasons, from witnessing our daily life, to voicing our dreams and aspirations, to enhancing our experience of travel or any transition, or to just having a safe place to play (Imagine!).

On Saturday, January 16 and Sunday, January 17, a small group of very diverse people gathered together in Dawson Creek at “Picture It!”, to enjoy a One Day Mini-Retreat of Introductory Art Journaling, including a hot lunch and all supplies for experimenting. Most participants felt that the highlight of the day was opening their personalized “stash injections”, prepared for them by Barb Daley, Art Journaler Extraordinaire. The next favourite part was having the whole day to create, with kindred spirits, and to learn ALL kinds of simple techniques for self-expression. Someone said it was like a spa for their spirit!

Barb Daley is currently planning a mini-retreat for a local group that will soon be travelling to China. Travelling with a Visual Journal is an excellent way to get the most out of any journey. She will be hosting that event in her home/studio, “Seven Bangles Art & Design”, on Feb 27 and/or Feb 28. She is also planning to host a presentation when she returns from China, in early April, with proceeds going to Haiti.

Also, watch for “Art Journalling for the Singer, Songwriter or Musician” coming later this spring. For more info contact Barb at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or www.barbarajdaley.com.

The Trews Sketch by Barb Daley

Trews_1.jpg

More and more people are starting to document the city's music and arts events in mediums besides photography. Last week we featured Amy Gothard's sketch of The Sweetwater Ramblers at Open Mic. This week we have another sketch, this one done by Barb Daley at The Trews Acoustic Show on November 30. Says Barb: "The Trews had such mad energy that I could no sooner NOT sketch them than I could stay sitting down ".

We would love to feature these sorts of articles on a regular basis - if you are a visual artist who has created (or would like to create) a piece at one of our local shows drop me a line: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

An Evening of Sensuality

sensuality posterNo doubt if you've seen the posters for the event the Women's Resource
Centre is holding on Friday, November 14th  you were intrigued. I know I
was, with their offer to “titillate, stimulate, and exhilarate” my
senses, who wouldn't be?

I talked to the  shows producers and organizers, Tanya Clary and Niki
Hedges
to gain a little more information about this sensual evening and by
the end of our discussion I was booking the night off work in order to
attend what is promising to be a fantastic night of entertainment and
artistry.  Not only will our rich local talent be showcased through the
work of Barb Daley, Suzon Tremblay, Shannon  Butler, Tom Kirschner, Aleisha Hendry, Jason Butler and countless others but there will also be a  special guest, Lucki from Circus Aerials out of Vancouver will be performing aworld class silk aerial show!

There will be art ranging from photography to body casting displayed, and entertainment will run the gamut from blues, to fusion dancing,  to comedy acts! Both Niki and Tanya assured me that the art displayed would be a chance to see our local artist's most interesting work, that which is not typically shown in our own art gallery. The night's food will be provided by North Peace Secondary School's Culinary Arts Program.

There will be an oyster bar, chocolate dipped strawberries, and chocolate martinis to name only a few of the decadent “edibles and libations” on hand. Innovations Cold Laser Esthetics's donated the roses to be used in the rose draw. The roses are being sold for $20.00  each and the lucky winners will receive top prizes!
If you've ever been involved with the Women's Resource Centre you know that they are a non-profit organization dedicated to helping not only the women of Fort St. John but women on a global level as well. They rely on the generous support of sponsors and like-minded people in the community to keep their  gracious cause alive. The Women's Resource Centre supports the idea of healthy sensuality and sexuality on your own terms and hopes this event will showcase sensuality that promotes these attitudes.

The ladies hope to see this become an annual event, and are still looking for sponsors for this years show. Tickets are available at Cosmic Grounds for $30.00 general seating. The show runs from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Please make sure to attend this “stimulating” evening, you will enjoy prime entertainment and the chance to celebrate ourselves as truly sensual beings!
