The Ride for the Disabled

Posted on : 03 February 2012 By

Horses are incredibly intuitive creatures. They are a symbol of freedom and adventure for countless people. Working alongside them teaches us not only of their care, but of ourselves as well. This is the premise upon which The Ride for the Disabled was built. The Ride is a non-profit organization formed in 1984 which provides horseback riding opportunities for people with a wide range of disabilities. In addition to this, it promotes healthy living, exercise, and independence. It provides its patrons with a challenge, and the tools to conquer that challenge, all while having fun.

Every Wednesday afternoon, volunteers meet at the North Peace Light Horse Association’s arena to round up the horses. Among the group there are people of every age and experience level, all of whom share a common interest. It is not, as one might expect, specific to horses. Rather, it is what they have come to represent.

As the horses are gathered and groomed, the riders and their families begin to arrive. Again, the riders vary in both age and disability, and the experience is unique to the individual. While some are more comfortable simply leading, many prefer the excitement of riding. The volunteers assist by side-walking and ensuring the safety of the riders, but also by engaging the activity as communal. There is obvious therapeutic value to be found in programs such as this, and it is clear from the expression on the face of each person involved that that experience is genuinely fun.

As a person with little knowledge of horses, my initial involvement was daunting to say the least. I first entered the arena unsure of what to expect, but was quickly reassured by the welcoming spirit of my fellow volunteers. They were patient with my inexperience, literally showing me the ropes.

After an evening of great company and a delicious homemade dinner, I was hooked. For me, one of the most amazing things I witnessed took place during the final ride of the night. A girl in a wheelchair was guided onto the ramp where she was harnessed up and lifted onto a horse, held safely in the arms of an experienced rider. Once they began to walk around the arena, her face light up with the most brilliant smile I had ever seen. The feeling you get from participating is incomparable to anything else I know.

After observing first-hand the methods of The Ride, the benefits become obvious; confidence and self-esteem inadvertently rise, physical health becomes enjoyable, and the sense of community becomes undeniable. Riders and volunteers alike forge friendships, both with one another and the horses they ride. And at the end of it all, the memories made are sure to last a lifetime.

They have recently starting fundraising by selling chocolates, so be sure to buy a box to show your support! Also, new volunteers are always needed, as are donations.
