Fort St John Local Music Documentary

Friday, 05 June 2009 20:04 Written by Alysha Galbreath

Fort St. John Music DocumentaryGood things always have a way of showing up in unexpected places. In the case of Fort St. John, the great music scene that continues to thrive and grow in one of the most unexpected (and most underestimated) locales is a perfect example of this phenomenon.

Having experienced and been lucky enough to be a part of the energy, diversity, and talent of the FSJ music scene, I found it impossible not to help tell the story of the musicians who keep this community alive through hard work, passion, and a fundamental love of music which - I believe - is an essential part of each of these musicians.
Two years ago I started wandering around Fort St. John, video camera in hand, catching what I could of outdoor and indoor shows, talking to musicians, trying to capture the magic that floats with the each note from every song.

Along the way, obstacles that face this burgeoning music community became very apparent. Some bands find community support can be lacking and venue availability/affordability is a huge challenge for every band, but mostly the motivation for these musicians was exposed. Why play? Why spend this time challenging themselves? How much work goes into a show or writing songs? What are the hopes for themselves, for the community? Through the answers, suggestions, and revelations one thing remained clear – it is all for the love of music.

Fast forward to 2009, the project is complete. Honestly, it is only a glimpse of a time already gone by in the history of the music community in Fort St. John, but the hope is that it brings a greater understanding of the mysterious musician, their motivations, and why community support is so important. To my friends, keep growing, keep playing, and keep loving what you do, continue creating these great things in unexpected places. I hope to see you soon.

Alysha Galbreath’s documentary on Fort St. John’s local music scene is freely available for anyone who wishes to see it.
