The "Rules for Contributing"

Every good game has a set of good rules.  These are the rules to which our organization functions and by which we live by.  But don't worry, to keep thing simple (and because we don't have a very good memory), we only have five...

  • Individual
  • Inclusive
  • Local
  • Positive
  • Actionable
That’s it.  It's pretty much all you need to know... but If you really want to dig in more, here’s some more info:

Individual

People Come First

Your article is written by a person (you), and is written for your people (your community, friends, and family)

You, as a contributor, are not anonymous here.  You are a person with a face, an identity, and a personality.  When you contribute, the article will be linked and displayed as “written by YOU”, with your face and bio on the bottom.

Why is this important?  Because this website is about our community... and the kind of community I want to live in isn’t comprised of cold faceless organizations -- it’s comprised of real genuine people expressing their first hand stories.

If you are the representative of an organization, we totally understand your desire to be egoless in your efforts to spread the organizations needs.  However, if you are contributing info, the info comes from YOU, the individual who is a member of the organization.  By all means edit your bio to include your role for the organization you represent, but you are not entitled to hide behind it.

Inclusive

All Are Welcome

Your article needs to be inclusive and open for the entire community.

If Northern Groove were a party, you, and everyone you know are invited.  Your neighbors, friends, friends of friends, people you haven’t seen since high school, and even people you wish you’d never see again, have all been invited.

The party is awesome and it’s gonna be a great time for everyone who comes out.  In fact, the more people who show up the better, and the more people that show up that I don’t know... the more fun it’s gonna be.

If that doesn’t make sense, than I’ll maybe say it a little differently.  This website and everything we do is about showing all the interesting and exciting people and things happening in this region.  The things that we write about are available and inclusive to everyone.  There needs to be an open invitation to everyone who is interested in finding out about stuff and about getting involved.

By being inclusive it forces us to be about bringing people together and growing, not about creating separation and division.

… and it’s more fun.

Local

That Small Town Feelin’ of Home

Articles and contributions should relate to something or someone in (or connected to) our geographical region.  This site is a bit of a celebration of all the neat, fun, and random stuff that happens.

What we’re really trying to do is ensure that the articles and info provided by this website and the other things we do is stuff that people (like you), care about.  Especially people, organizations, and events that you’re connected with, are a part of, or want to be connected with.

The more local connections the better.

Positive and fun.

You are awesome.  The things your doing are awesome and your organization is awesome.  This is true.

But wait... it gets better.  Your awesomeness was not achieved through winning awards, or obtaining a certain number of recognitions, or even your hard work of getting where you are today... in fact, you were born with it, as is everyone else you know or have ever met.

The posts that are written on this site or in anything else we do need to be written in a way that is complementary, encouraging, and feels good to everyone mentioned in the post.

Contributors are about highlighting the bright spots in our community... not about comparing how much brighter one spot is vs another.

No rants, or political games.  There are other places for that, but not here.

Actionable

You can’t start a revolution without a call to action... can you?

So, that was a really great article you just contributed, but now what?

The “call to action” is the purpose for the article... It is the request that encourages the reader to investigate further, buy tickets, learn more about, make a change regarding, or take some kind of action based on the words that you’ve written...

You see, you as a contributor hold all of the power for the future.  With your words you may be able to make a successful impact on the person, event, or organization you’re writing about.  In fact, it’s not that you might be able to make a difference... it’s how much of an impact can I make?

But then again... you’ll never know if you don’t ask.

Build in a “call to action” in each of your articles and contributions.  Your fancy wordsmithing will get you nothing without one.

Call to actions can be simple... an example might be something as simple as  “checkout more of this artists work on her website at kilnhouse.ca”.  OR,  “last time I checked there were still tickets available, so come join me at this event!”  OR,  “... and that’s why I think more people should learn how to knit... I’m hosting a beginners workshop at my house this Tuesday and you’re invited.  Please pass this on to anyone you think would be interested.”

But enough of this theoretical stuff!  Let’s get started by writing articles that not only inspire and bring hope... but actually create action.

Small action is still action... something is better than nothing... and heck, if somebody else is going to start doing stuff, than so will I!

Your call to action:  Contribute an article!

About Us

About us?  Heck, enough about us, how about YOU!

So, although the title of this page is titled "About Us", a better name for it would be "About You".

We're assuming, that if you're looking at this page, you're living here in the North Peace Region area... or if you're not, you're either planning on passing through, or are possibly considering living here in the near future.

With that in mind, we can assure you that we actually have a lot in common... and if you don't mind, we'd like to take a moment to talk about some of the things that might be of interest to you.

First of all, whether you're living in the Peace Region or just passing through, we think that while you're here, you should enjoy it!  If you knew about all the exciting things that are happening in town, you're probably going to love it here, if you don't already do.

Second, we wanted to let you know, there are amazing people here doing amazing things and we want you to meet them.  Also, if you're particularly passionate about something (say a particular activity, for of art, or hobby), we want to connect you with all the people who are also interested in what you do!

So who is Northern Groove?

Well, think of it as a collection of contributors in this community that are loosly organized under the heading of "Northern Groove". We are ideally people from all different backgrounds, ages, and interests, who all want to help spread the word about the things we're involved in and invite others to get connected.

We are not a big government funded entity in any way...  We don't have an office, or a receptionist, or even any full-time staff.  The people involved are people like you, who care or the community.  The information provided by "Northern Groove", doesn't come from "Northern Groove", it comes from the people of the community.  It comes from people like you.

The small team of part-time "staff" for Northern Groove is small and mostly invisible.  We fix things that aren't working, work on making or services better and more effective, meet with people who want to support us, and deal with the huge pile of necessary paperwork needed for running any kind of organization. We operate as a business, so we can adapt quickly and keep up with a changing society.  We are funded by the local businesses and organizations of this region and help them in return through advertising and promotional services.

Most of our support comes from the people like you, businesses like where you work, and organizations that you're involved in who all benefit from having a great community like ours to enjoy and spend time in.

I like it!  How do I get involved!

Awesome!  Getting involved is easy.  We're always wanting more people to contribute from all parts of the community.

Northern Groove January 2012

Welcome to 2012, the year the Mayans gave up on calendars, life, the universe, and everything.  Well, not til December at least...which means we have 11 more issues of Northern Groove mag to go until, much like Y2K, nothing exciting happens and we sit around and wait for the next bit of nonsense about the end of everything to come around.

But, in the meantime lets put on our happypants!  2012 is off to a freakishly awesome start.  From the warm winds blowing through Christmas, we get to the "hope it's cold enough for the High On Ice Festival, then it can warm right up again" weather.  We hope.

This month, we celebrate the chills and thrills of competitive ice carving on our cover as doodled by Tyson Mowat, local amateur cartoonist and bass player.  What does playing bass have to do with being a cartoonist?  Well...nothing, other than both require a sense of humour.  From a hungover Rainbow Owl to manifesting yoganess, this issue has it all.  We recap another monstrously successful Music That Moves You Holiday Edition, and Margaret May profiles local "arteest" Sonja Butts (who FYI was involved, along with the local Arts Council, in making High on Ice happen in the first place many moons ago).  Speaking of High on Ice, we have the most current sked of stuff that's goin' on as part of the festivities.  We'll also post that nifty stuff on this here website to keep ya informed.  NENAS profiles John Cardinal, and Jenny Cazes talks with Alli Peck about her freshly shorn dome.  Tony Warriner says "let's dance" and boogies his way through the why's and wherefore's of putting one foot in and shaking it all about a la Evangel Chapel style.  Russell Eggleston swings in with news about the kickoff of the Musicians Exchange Program and much, much more.  Want to know what it takes to put on a Stage North performance?  Sue Popesku details that.  How about the latest on the new FSJ Hospital?  Yep, we have that too.

Check out the mag online, or find an old-school paper copy at locations throughout the city!

On behalf of all of us at Northern Groove, thanks for making 2011 a phenomenally mega-tastic year!!!  All the best for 2012, and let's just ignore the Mayans.  We don't think they'll notice.

Kelowna Ballet Presents A Grand Passion

From the great ballet traditions of the 19th Century, through the sultry tango bars of Argentina, to the most impassioned and tragic love story of all time, Ballet Kelowna takes audiences on a passionate journey through ballet history. Argentinian composer Astor Piazzola’s exciting and vibrant music is the inspiration for Tangazzo (2005), an intoxicating look into the seductive dance of love and passion. Romeo and Juliet Appassionata (2010), set to Tchaikovsky’s soaring and powerful music, is a condensed version of the familiar tale of star-crossed young lovers and will surely move all who see it. To complete the program, we will offer a new ballet once again from one of Canada’s acclaimed choreographers, a work that is sure to captivate.

Ballet Kelowna will present A Grand Passion on Tuesday, February 28th, at 7:30 pm. Tickets are available from the box office, by phone at (250) 785-1992 and online.

Adults $37, Seniors $27, Students and Children $17.

The adventure continues! Koba Entertainment’s smash hit Quest for the Extra Ordinary Aliens is an out-of-this-world theatrical production that will lead families on a heroic quest through the whimsical escapades of The Backyardigans live at the North Peace Cultural Centre.

The Backyardigans gang – Pablo the penguin, Tyrone the moose, Uniqua the purplespotted creature, Tasha the hippo, and Austin the kangaroo – are five high-spirited preschool friends whose zany imaginations are whisking them on yet another epic adventure!

Quest for the Extra Ordinary Aliens takes the audience on a non-stop musical expedition as The Backyardigans become Daring Detectives, Cookie Security Guards and Space Ace Reporters who travel in hot pursuit of a mysterious space ship and its missing passengers – the cookie-crumbing Aliens! Tag along with the gang and their extraordinary host as they travel to shivering Frozen Toes Mountain, the blistering Hot Footsy Desert, and the volcanic Lost Pirate Island – singing and dancing the whole way!

The Backyardigans’ Quest for the Extra Ordinary Aliens is a finger-snapping, toetapping, mind-boggling adventure that will have the whole family dancing on the edge of their seats.

The theatrical production is based on the top rated preschool television program The Backyardigans, airing on Treehouse TV in Canada and Nick Jr. in the US.

African Guitar Summit

Your launch to Black History Month!

History was made in 2004 when the super group African Guitar Summit assembled at the CBC studios to record what has been widely hailed as the greatest recording ever to come out of the fertile African music scene in Canada. Following their Juno win for World Music Album of the Year in 2005, the group has performed to sell-out audiences throughout Canada, and at memorable events such as Bob Geldof’s Live 8 (shown on 182 television networks and 2,000 radio networks). The CD also charted in the top 10 most downloaded albums for a period on iTunes’ Today’s Top Album chart, and in the top 20 of the World Music Charts Europe.

The star-studded collective unites the talents of 9 musicians, each an expert in their individual style. The African Summit features: From Guinea, the smooth fire of Juno Award winner Alpha YaYa Diallo, with his countryman Naby Camara on balafon from Ghana, the elder master of the guitar, Pa Joe, with “golden voice” Theo Boakye, and the heartbeat of drummer Kofi Ackah; from Kenya, the Fiesta guitar of Professor Adam Solomon; from Burundi/Rwanda, the bluesy Mighty Popo; and from Madagascar the quicksilver guitars and harmonies of Donne Roberts and multiple Juno Award winner Madagascar Slim.

Their debut CD “African Guitar Summit” was honoured with a Juno as World Music Album of the Year at the 2005 Juno Awards in April. Their second album, "African Guitar Summit II", garnered a 2007 Juno award nomination in the same category.

Considered the finest Canadian guitarists of African origin, the African Guitar Summit brings a veritable honey pot of picking and riffing that's as authentic as any ancestral drum rhythm.  See them live on stage at the Cultural Centre. Experience this superb and truly incredible performance…and take note: while you take in the rich, harmonized vocals, the movement, the rollicking guitar lines and unmistakable African flavor, you’ll need to look around at your surroundings to remind yourself you’re in Fort St John and not in the artists’ African home. It will be easy to forget!

The show starts at 7:30 and the tickets are $40.00 Adult, $35.00 Seniors/Youth, $25 12 and under.  Tickets are available at the box office, by phone at (250) 785-1992 or online.
