Giant Dancing Vaginas

Posted on : 10 March 2012 By Rik Leaf

From the quiet intimacy of a candle lit room on Thursday night, to the electric energy that can only be generated by a giant dancing vagina, FSJ continues to rock my world!

Last night I had the privilege of being a guest performer during the Vagina Monologues where I was joined on stage by a grooving, swaying, sashaying giant vagina who danced furiously through the song. My mom never told me there would be gigs like this.

I thought the cast and crew were amazing and the audience had great energy, so awesome that both nights are total sell outs. It was a terrific evening. I'll be back again tonight...cause seriously, I don't know when I'll have an opportunity to play with a giant dancing vagina again.

Today I am hosting a slam poetry workshop that is taking place at Evangel Church. If you are a writer or poet or just love words, you should come. It starts at 2:00 p.m

Three great shows

Much Music in March at the Centre!

Come get your seat. . .

All shows at 7:30  ~ Bar and Café and Box Office open at 6:30.

15th - Arrogant Worms   Canadian fav’s Mike McCormick, Chris Patterson and Trevor Strong

They say it began as a hobby, making fun of a big dumb world. Luckily, the world is still dumb and The Arrogant Worms still have plenty to sing about.  Fast, furious and family friendly, the wit is quick, the satire is biting and the musicianship is second to none.

Their appeal has earned them fans from kids to parents to grandparents to Princess Leia. So The Arrogant Worms will continue to provide tuneful and silly escapism for everyone who needs it. And if you think you don’t need it, well you’re wrong. You do. The Arrogant Worms know what’s best for you and what’s best for you is The Arrogant Worms.

19th - Caladh Nua     Comin to us from Dublin Ireland!

They’re “Traditional Irish to the core but with the added ingredients of a fresh youthful approach, a sense of fun and a willingness to stray from the beaten path. Called the “group to watch ” (The Irish Free Press), Caladh Nua boasts two fiddlers, award-winning Lisa Butler, who is also lead singer, and Paddy Tutty; award-winning button accordionist Derek Morrissey; Colm O'Caoimh on guitar, bouzouki and vocals, and Eoin O Meachair on banjo, mandolin, whistle and vocals.

From traditional music to moving Irish laments to fun filled ballads to some solid toe tappin tunes, ” the band's repertoire and energy is guaranteed to capture an audience of any generation.  Solid traditional music with plenty of flair and lots of musical imagination" (Irish Music Magazine)

22nd  - Carlos del Juno and his Blues Mongrels FSJ get ready to be blown away!

*2 time gold medalist at the World Honer Harmonica Championship!  Harmonica Player of the Year8 times out of the Canadian Maple Blues Award's 15 year history. Junos, Blues player of the year, to name a just few.  In fact when it comes to awards, it's either retire the category or rephrase the question to "Best Harmonica Player Not Named Carlos".

Maybe he swallowed a harmonica as a youth, and it became permanently lodged near his voice box – how else to explain the flair, fluency and devilish command of the diatonic mouth harp from the chrome prince of the instrument, Carlos del Junco!

New Orleans second line grooves, swing, Latin, hip-hop or ska melodies, to swampy roots rock…Carlos and his band, the Blues Mongrels deliver it top notch.

Three Great Shows…Come get your seat!

The Worms are Coming!

Posted on : 09 March 2012 By Oliver Hachmeister

Going back in my mind I know that I have seen The Arrogant Worms in 2010 and 2003 but I think I had seen them even before that as well... but perhaps we just rode the same cosmic brainwave.  With comedic songs like Jesus' Brother Bob and Carrot Juice is Murder, they won my heart and mind (or at least what was left of them) from the start. Now they are returning to Fort St. John and you have the opportunity to see and hear them for yourself.

It began as a hobby, making fun of a big dumb world. Luckily, the world is still dumb and The Arrogant Worms still have plenty to sing about. Their shows are fast, furious and family friendly. The wit is quick, the satire is biting and the musicianship is second to none. The Arrogant Worms have been playing music and making fun of this wide world of ours for over 20 years gaining rave reviews and new fans wherever they go. Their songs are in school lesson plans, in textbooks and even played on the Space Shuttle. Their energy and showmanship were captured on the DVD of their concert with the renowned Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. They have performed around the world.

The Arrogant Worms will perform at the North Peace Cultural Centre on Thursday, March 15th at 7:30 pm. Tickets are available from the  Centre's box office, by phone at (250) 785-1992 and online at www.npcc.bc.ca. Adults $40, Students & Seniors $35, Children $25

In a Room Full of Candles

Posted on : 09 March 2012 By Rik Leaf

I'm here!

I arrived in the fair city of FSJ yesterday afternoon in a flurry of activity. In a matter of seconds Russ had unloaded all of my gear and luggage onto the sidewalk outside Whole Wheat & Honey and took off down the road, calling over his shoulder that he'd sent a text for someone to pick me up....so no worries mate! For 12 or 13 minutes I was the scared, homeless guy with a lot of bags standing at the intersection looking really confused.

True to his word, a few moments later Tony showed up, the gear was heaved into the back of the truck and we took off for his house where last nights concert was held. The house was located on a hill a few kms from town with a spectacular view of the city lights. A fireplace filled the room with an inviting warmth as dozens of candles were lit, conjuring images in my mind of the Police video, Wrapped Around Your Finger.

Guests arrived, the scene was set as we settled in for a great night of stories and songs. I've said it before and I'll say it again...FSJ is an amazing place to perform. It was great to meet up with old friends and make some new ones. A number of the people at the show had already signed up for some sessions and crreative blocks through the musician exchange program, which makes me super excited to see what today has in store.

P.S. After all this gushing about how great you are, I'm starting to wonder if maybe there isn't a massive, cover up going on...masquerading a dark, seedy artistic underbelly. I may have to grab my camera and do some investigative digging today. :)

Check out these amazing photos taken this past weekend at The Vagina Monologues!!  Audiences were invited to let loose and get silly with this fun photo-booth -- and the photos, printed for take-home that very night, made for awesome souvenirs!  Thank you to our photo-booth sponsors and volunteers, including Unforgettable Memories and Northern Groove.

Not only did our photo-booth get rave reviews, but the new, intimate version of the show is officially wowing audiences!  A common phrase overheard as people left the theatre was, “I’m coming back next weekend!”

That’s right!  The Vagina Monologues is running for TWO MORE NIGHTS, this coming Friday and Saturday at the Quality Inn.  Doors and photo-booth open at 7:30 and show starts at 8pm.  Tickets are just $25 and support the Women’s Resource Centre and their 2012 V-Day campaign.

Get your tickets at the Cultural Centre box office or here: https://tickets.npcc.bc.ca/ before Friday at 3pm.  After then, you can try your hand at getting tickets at the door.

Just a friendly nudge-nudge reminder about Wednesday's Home Routes House Concert Featuring Kim Wempe.

Who is Kim Wempe? From her Bio:

Kim Wempe has a fight in her. From the second you hear one of her stunning folk ballads, it's not something that can be overlooked. Some may call her vocals haunting and smokey, others may insist she is the child of Janis Joplin and sister of Adele, but the unique pull of her music is the quiet warrior you can hear seeping through her songs. You can hear the fearlessness in every strum. The minute her wide brown eyes fix themselves on the road ahead, there is no holding her back. Wempe is out to blaze her own trail and leave a slew of dropped jaws in her wake.

Born in a small Saskatchewan farming town, Wempe lived for a period in Alberta before heading to Canada's East Coast in 2007. After only three months in Nova Scotia, she realized that what once seemed a daunting and unplanned move turned out to be a blessing in disguise. She has peformed alongside Canadian favourites such as Royal Wood, Jill Barber, Jenn Grant, Amelia Curran, James Keelaghan, David Francey, Matt Andersen, Rawlins Cross, and Madison Violet. Winning both an East Coast Music Award and Music Nova Scotia Award for her 2009 release Where I Need to Be EP, it's not hard to tell she's on to something.

Kim's undeniable talent has been showcased at JUNOFest, the Vancouver Olympics, Canadian Music Week and festivals across the East Coast including the Stan Rogers Folk Festival and Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival. This September she will return to stages across the country, bringing her powerful live set to audiences coast to coast.

Her new album "Paining with Tides" is our now, and you can preview tracks on her website kimwempe.com.

Tickets for this "in the living room right near your ears" show are available at Retro Relics or at the door.

SHOWDATE: Wed Mar 7, start showing up at 7pm, show starts 7:30ish.

Booking a Session with Rik Leaf

Posted on : 05 March 2012 By Rik Leaf

Hi FSJ!   Well this is exciting! Being one of the first artists in the new N.G. initiative “The Musician Exchange Program” I’m really looking forward to spending a week or so in your fair city.

I’m going to assume there are a few folks reading this that I haven’t met, and I wanted to let you know why I’m excited to spend some time with you. I believe there is value in taking risks through all stages of life, both personally and professionally. Taking risks creates an energy...a momentum in your life. It opens the door to discovering things about yourself and those around you that you just couldn’t discover any other way. And when you start to take risks in your own life and pursue the hopes and dreams in your heart, you automatically create an environment that encourages others to do the same. That’s part of what I like about the Musician Exchange program and what I anticipate happening while I’m in town.

Honestly, I’m coming to FSJ because the Musician Exchange is part of my journey of discovery and adventure as I invest in my creative experiences. I’m looking forward to some exciting collaboration and some creative risk taking. I anticipate sharing everything I love about  music, about writing and performance, and learning about others and about myself in the process. I hope my willingness and enthusiasm for taking risks in the pursuit of creative excellence will encourage you to do the same. I’ve listed a number of workshops and seminars to give you a few ideas for how we could spend our time. But I am wide open to suggestions if you have something else you’d like to talk about, jjust send an email and we can discuss ideas.

The scheduling, booking, and money stuff is all handed through an online booking program called Clickbook... a tool that shows what times are still available, and enables online-booking.  All payment is handled through paypal.

Here’s the list of stuff below.

Feel free to choose a format that would work best for you. We are scheduling one-on-one sessions, some small group discussions as well as some workshops.

  1. Songwriting - Whether you are just starting out as a writer and looking for some helpful hints and suggestions, or recording your latest CD and interested in a producer's perspective, a one-on-one session provides an opportunity to invest in your songwriting craft where you are at.
  2. A Performance Workshop - It can be really hard to find advice to help craft a great live show. This workshop is ideal for touring musicians and bands looking to hone the craft of the live performance. We tackle stage design, stage movement, eye contact, interaction, creating a set list that flows, identifying the strengths and weaknesses.
  3. The Business of Music (Getting Organized) - Steps to setting up shows and tours, promotion, marketing, contacting media, generating interest and communicating your story. Great business planning makes for great tours.
  4. Production - creating a dynamic collaborative team - from producers to performers, you want to surround yourself by the most talented, creative and supportive people you can find. This session discusses how to do just that and how the changes in technology and the industry make this more possible. Remote recording, collaboration with musicians & studios around the world.
  5. Music is For Everyone - Music is a gift, it makes our lives richer, more exciting, fun and fulfilling. This roundtable session is for people of all ages, from all walks of life and skill levels, who would like to spend some time with learning a few tips and tricks and go away encouraged and inspired to make music a part of your life.
  6. Multi Media & Social Media - this is another round table session.  Exploring the tools available for storytelling and promotion. Combining music, poetry, photography, & film to tell a story and sharing that with others.
  7. Spoken Word/Slam Poetry - combining the craft of creative writing with performance and public delivery, this session can be one-on-one or in a round table format.

Former Northern Lights College teacher Elicia (“ Leish” ) Bullock has headed off on an epic walk-about, providing those of us at home some vicarious glimpses of a whole ‘nother world.

Elicia is heading to Australia first, where she lived while earning her undergraduate degree. Next she travels to Viet Nam, Cambodia, Thailand, Nepal, possibly Tibet, then Northern India, before returning to us in the summer, when we hope she will share her photos and journal.

Nepali run “Volunteer Initiative Nepal” (VIN) places adventurous people in a wide variety of projects aimed at improving education, sanitation, health and medical services and teaching , sustainable farming and providing women’s centres.

Elicia will be teaching English to Monks, between primary school age to about 18 years of age, at a Buddhist monastery high in the mountains. In Nepal, many families send children to monasteries to be educated, for cultural reasons, and out of financial necessity, as the Monasteries turn no child away. When a monk reaches 18 years of age, he can stay with the monastic life, or move on. If English teaching has been provided, he has many more options in moving into the world of employment.

Elicia will be keeping us posted, at leishsadventuresabroad .blogspot.com, and we hope to plan a presentation on her return.
She will be sharing her experiences, as well as sharing VIN’s need for support and donations, possibly through a direct link to the organization.

Yesterday I got another mystery voicemail... It's hilarious, quite graphic, yet strangely encouraging all at the same time  After my initial laughter, it's taken me a day or so to muster up the courage to post it... but I guess, I did ask for it in a previous post.  This voicemail was left by a kind mysterious man who tells the little known story of the birth of Northern Groove... and actually of my physical birth as well.  It's kinda awkward and hard to explain so you'll just have to listen for yourself.  I hope you get as much of a laugh out of it as I did!

The voicemail is at the bottom of this post...

And now that there seems to be a few voicemails coming in... why stop now?  Just to fill in a little bit of the backstory, we (Northern Groove) have a phone number that forwards to our permanent voicemail.  The voicemail is setup to forward to our entire staff (Dave, Mark and myself).  Over the years we've recieved a pretty steady stream of pretty funny message... so with all that in mind, we've recently decided it would be kinda fun (and possibly a really bad but interesting idea) to post new voicemail here to our website.

So, if you're up to the challenge, feel free to leave us a message, and if it makes us laugh and isn't too offensive to anyone in general... we'll post it.

Our number is 250-663-8851

PS, the picture isn't me, but seemed appropriate based on the voicemails description.

  ***ALL AGES WELCOME***

Barstool Music

Song:  Barnaby’s Gold

Home Town:  Fort St. John, BC

Band Members:

      Chad Corno

      Steve Skillen

      Kaitlyn Skillen

      John Herman

      Angie Seeley

Band Bio:

Barstool Music started in Kamloops BC in the summer of 2009. Origionally as an acoustic duo, Steve Skillen of "On To the Next.."(from Kamloops BC)and Chad Corno, from Fort St Johns "Fallen Idols" began an acoustic side project just for fun. The group opened for one rock show in Kamloops with no thoughts on continuing. 3 years later still making songs the group decided to become a full band. Now with Keyboard, drums, and bass, the group is ready to break into the music scene in Fort St John. With 3 of the members formally in punk bands it provides an interesting take on Folk Rock. Lots of vocal hooks and melodies, this band draws influences from all sorts like: Lucero, Bob Dylan, Chuck Ragan, Sons of Daughters, and many more. Barstool Music like most artists in FSJ want nothing more than to just make music, and share it with others.

Dave & Long Road

Song:  Black n Blues

Home Town:  Fairview, AB

Band Members:

      Dave Long

      Justin Beaucage

      Stephanie Long

      Annette Little

      Shaelynn Long

Band Bio:

Dave & Long Road is a Fairview Alberta Band. Dave Long, the founding member, has been writing and performing his own music for over 30 years, opening for groups such as the Joiner Brothers, Valdy and Gerry Feldgard. Recently Dave and his Band were the headliners for the Alberta plus55 Summer Games held in Fairview in 2011. Dave is joined by his two daughters Stephanie and Shaelynn with friends Annette Little, Justin Beaucage, Sarah Richards and Kevin Bekivich. The Band has recently released their second CD recording named “Tunes from the Attic” consisting of songs with a unique Country Rock and Blues Flavour. Songs such as “Black n Blues” and “I’ll be Home” not only tell a good story but are sure to get you on your feet with lively piano, rich vocals and cool beats. In addition to recording and performing their own music, this Grass Roots Band also plays a variety of upbeat newer and older top 40 music spanning five decades playing for Corporate events such as the 60th Anniversary of the Fairview College, Dunvegan Bridge 50th anniversary celebrations and the Alberta Colleges and Institutions Academic Staff Associations Annual General meeting held at the Jasper Park Lodge. Dave and Long Road writes and records in their own recording studio in Fairview, called Little Peace Productions. Groups that have strongly influenced Daves writing style have been performer/song writers such as Billy Joel, Jeff Lyne of ELO, Rodger Hodgekins of Supertramp and Gospel recording artist Micheal W. Smith. Somewhere mixed into the groups sound is a curious musical influence from country artists like Brooks and Dunn, Garth Brooks and his alter ego Chris Gains. The thrill and satisfaction that comes from writing and performing music is something all the members of Dave & Long Road greatly enjoy.

Like Fire

Song:  Broken Guitar

Town:  Pouce Coupe, BC

Band Members:

      Jonathan Simmons

      Adam Gorner

      Jeremy Keath

      Greg Keath

Band Bio:

With their memorable melodies and face melting guitar solos, Like Fire (formerly known as Danmark, and What The Moon Brings) is quickly gaining an avid fan base in the Peace Region. As finalists in the RocKIN the Peace multiple times, and winner of the Grizfest battle of the bands (scored by a three judge panel) Like Fire is hot on the scene. Their song “Heart Attack” can be found on the RocKIN the Peace 2011 compilation album. Lead singer Jonathan has already received recognition for his vocal stylings. He was a regional finalist for the David Foster Star Search, has participated in Canadian Idol, and has award winning songs with the Peace Region Songwriters Association.

Currently, Like Fire is performing locally and working hard to bring their fans more pleasure by recording their first album. “It’s a lot of fun to sit back and to listen to what each person plays,” says guitarist Adam of recording. “Often we’ll listen to someone and say, ‘Wow! That’s cool! I didn’t know you played that!’ It’s fun.” Bassist Greg says, “My favourite part of the band is the writing process. You know a person in a totally different way when you play music with them. When you’re coming up with a song, you feel each other, you get kind of an idea how the other person plays, and you play to that. It’s really interesting. You know a person pretty well when you can play well with them. And performing, it’s just fun.”

Like Fire’s music style is mainly hard rock with some punk influence, and a tinge of blues. With influences like Alkaline Trio, Dashboard Confessionals, Dream Theater, Slash, and Weezer, it’s no wonder their style is hard to classify. “Some of it’s heavy but there’s always a melodic sense to it. You’ll find yourself singing along to most songs after the first listen” says Adam.

Jonathan writes most of the bands songs with catchy melodies and relatable lyrics, often taking inspiration from personal experience. “Emotion is a big part of it,” says Jonathan. “Either I’m really happy or down emotionally when I write a good song.” Adam adds his signature tone and guitar solos, adding depth to Jonathan’s phrases, while Jeremy’s tight rhythms, and Greg’s solid bass provide a dynamic backdrop enriching and completing the songs.

With songs like “Close Your Eyes” and “Death By Water” fans keep coming back, wanting more of Like Fire, and more is just what’s coming. “We’re on a hell-bent mission,” says Jonathan, “A mission to put the Peace Country on the map for famous local music.”

Smotherbox

Song:  Glass House

Home Town:  Chetwynd, BC

Band Members:

      Nathan Embree

      Craig Lalonde

Band Bio:

Smotherbox started out as a heavy metal/hard rock act founded back in 2007 by Nathan Embree, Ryan Hecker and Tyler Moore. After many setbacks and countless line-up changes the band has evolved into an acoustic project between, original member Nathan Embree and new addition Craig Lalonde. Craig replaced Ryan as the lead guitarist and driving force behind the band’s new softer sound.

Although the band has gone acoustic, lyrically they remain as dark and deep as always. They try to write songs with meaning that tell stories rather than focusing on catchy hooks and empty lyrics. Nathan, the lead singer/songwriter, has been writing songs since he first started playing guitar 15 years ago. Much like the “bi-polar” method, in which Nathan lives his life, his influences also range from one extreme to the next.

Key major influences on his song-writing start with folk artists like Bob Dylan, Neil Young and even Jewel and end with heavier acts such Tool, Marilyn Manson and In Flames. This odd mixture of heroes makes for an original and bizarre writing style that seems refreshingly out of place in the acoustic world. Craig’s smooth sometimes bluesy leads, reminiscent of early Angus Young and/or Tony Iommi, bring a welcome familiarity to the unique rhythms of the band.

Although both key members of the band work full time at demanding jobs for Spectra Energy, they still desperately cling to the dream of one day being able leave the patch behind and do what they love, which is... and always will be... music.

The Revolution Sonics

Song:  Revolution Love

Town:  Rycroft, AB

Band Members:

      Ernst Cedar

      Tasia Johnson

      Isaac Cedar

      Mitch Cedar

      Hillary Cedar

      Christina Otterstrom

The Revolution Sonics are an acoustic/electro, roots/rock group exploring the landscapes of human experiences through music. Their style is a bit of folk meets roots meets rock at the world beat café. Releasing their first CD in 2008 on Winddance Records they were picked up for feature on CBC radio 1, Calgary. Tapping influences from a variety of sources, they creatively blend an array of cacophonous sounds, groovy guitar riffs and lively polyrhythms into an auditory ambiance that is delightful and stirring to the listener.

“The revolution Sonics are a passionate group with an eclectic sound. Known for their support of causes throughout the Peace Country Region, including the annual Red Cross Rocks concert and the Ten Thousand Villages. They bring meaningful lyrics to the stage with an abundance of enthusiasm wherever they play leaving their audiences energized and inspired.”

Tymmarah Zehr, Fund Development Coordinator, Canadian Red Cross, Grande Prairie

Their shows promote healthy living and reverence for the fickle, rollicking and beautiful world. Their shows are family friendly and suitable for all ages. Danceable ditties abound to chase yer ‘blues’ away.
