Home Routes House Concert - Jory Nash

Saturday, 23 January 2010 18:56 Written by Henry See

Jory_promo_shoot_2009_028.jpgIt’s house concert time again down at Retro Relics/The Rabbit Hole. This month we have Jory Nash coming for a visit on Thursday, February 4. Jory is out of Toronto and has 6 solo CDs on his independent Thin Man Records label. His website describes his musical influences thusly:

“Jory Nash is a Toronto-based, independent singer-songwriter. His music blends elements of folk, jazz, pop, country, soul & blues. There is little or no influence of salsa, didgeridoo or dub reggae in Jory’s music.” Sounds to me like the guy has a sense of humour.

His site also suggests we ask him about his homemade banjo.

I asked Jory what it was he liked about house concerts:

“I do a lot of them; probably 20 a year. Although this is my first Home Routes tour, I've talked to a lot of friends who have done one, and I think I know what to expect. What I like best about house concerts is the intimacy between artists and audience...audience members can ask questions, make requests, really see what the artist is doing up close. And there’s no barrier to going and meeting the artist/audience at intermission, or before, or afterwards, and real relationships are created, not just hinted at. And as a performer who loves to tell stories from the stage, the house concert is the perfect medium for presenting the kind of show that allows me to perform at my best. And now, to get to do 12 house concerts in 14 days as part of the Home Routes tour...really, what could be better???”

In spite of that being a rhetorical question, I'll answer… Sounds mighty fine to me.

The other thing I asked him about was jamming after the show. Those of you who have been to our previous house concerts know that the music doesn't stop when the ‘official’ show ends. Oh, no! It goes on and on. Local musicians, of which Fort St. John is so well endowed, bring their instruments and the after jam can continue until fingers start to bleed. Sometimes the jamming even starts before the show.

I warned Jory that there have been jams after the shows, and his response was: “Absolutely I’m up for a jam after the show...it looks and sounds cool!”

Yeah, what could be better! The show here is the first on Jory’s tour. So come on down February 4 at 7:30 for a great show and to show Jory why we call ourselves the music capital of Northern BC. You know it’s gonna be great because Jory plays regularly with BMac, otherwise known as Brian MacMillan, another FSJ honorary citizen.

Then gear up for our next house concert - Leonard & Jordan, two members of the TurtleDuhks, on Friday, March 5.

Tickets are $15 at the door. All proceeds go to Jory Nash.

Thursday, February 4. 7:30 pm. Jory Nash.

Friday, March 5. 7:30 pm. Leonard & Jordan.
